Sam Cooke
Joni Mitchell
Ray Charles
Temptations
Aretha Franklin
Cat Stevens
Marvin Gaye
Louis Armstrong
Van Morrison
Paul Simon
Simon & Garfunkel
Miles Davis
Bee Gees
Abba
Stevie Wounder
Johnny Cash
Madonna

Look at all these names
Out of several big name sources these groups and people are considered to be in the Music Rock and Roll categories.

I can not say stupid and dumb enough..................................

If any of the list is Rock and Roll then Lawrence Welk is Death Metal and Gwar is polka.

How come nobody in the music business with half a brain isn't challenging this total BS!

Thank you

End of Rant

Sambop wrote:All of the artists on that list are considered "crossover artists" having played at major rock festivals and TV shows, selling many records to a "rock" audience..

if we want to get precise about names and categories ....

You are referring to "rock", not to "rock & roll"

These guys played "rock & roll", with a swinging beat ...

... then young English kids began to imitate "rock & roll",
and eventually writing their own songs, the straight, even 8s, feel replaced the swinging shuffles
... that is "rock" music.
Rock music began fracturing into many different sub-genres thereafter.

Louis Armstrong is not "rock & roll", agreed ... but he is way closer to it than Gwar is.

oh?, so the tune Rock-N-Roll by Led Zeppelin off the Zoso album is not rock n roll? did it not come out in 1973? quite a few years after 1960 when as you suggest, died in 1960? RG is right, sambo is wrong..

AGAIN! :)

Guess it depends on if you are looking at just straight 'rock and roll', or the various sub-genres.

Sam Cooke R&B
Joni Mitchell folk-rock
Ray Charles R&B
Temptations Motown-rock
Aretha Franklin R&B
Cat Stevens folk-rock
Marvin Gaye Motown-rock
Louis Armstrong not even close
Van Morrison Rock for sure
Paul Simon folk-rock
Simon & Garfunkel folk-rock
Miles Davis nope
Bee Gees pop-rock
Abba pop-rock
Stevie Wonder - rock
Johnny Cash nope
Madonna pop-rock

I just sayin' for Christ sake lets keep it real.

Its one thing to say " yes R&R was influenced by other music genres" however, that would be the same thing as saying the Corvette LS7 was influenced by the Ford Model A.

I'd say most of those listed are jazz, folk, pop, or R&B artists. I like their stuff but it ain't Rock and Roll.

Hey Rich, did you get a listen to the latest version of Drum Thunder? It might meet your definition of Rock & Roll, although I think it has morphed into Prog Rock territory now. Still got a few ideas on that one when I can get some DAW time.

see.... this is where labels gets you in trouble.

labeling joni mitchell as "folk rock" for instance....i think the tendency is that when an artist is performing w an acoustic guitar....it's folk music. and by that definition JM's earlier stuff might be considered "folk" but in the 70's??? her stuff went to jazz....and in the 8o's her albums were most definitely R&R, albeit w very hip harmonies (chords) and exploring grown up, sophisticated themes not unlike Steely Dan.

same bit w P Simon...this guy has performed more genres than most. yes....again because he started off playing acoustic gtr on his early records some might call him a "folk rock" artist.....but he was at the forefront of introducing "world music" to the masses. And as early as the 70's his music and records became more "jazzy" as you could find all the best jazz studio cats playing on his records and accompany him when he played live.....Steve Gadd, Richard Tee, Eric Gale, Steve Khan, etc.

i do like SB's assertion that the older (swing/shuffle feel) stuff is "rock and roll" and then when it went to straight eighth note feel....that might be called "rock". that makes sense to me.

but really, in the end it does come down to semantics as none of this stuff has been (or ever could be) codified.

I don't where that list came from, but if you're talking about the pioneers and architects of R&R I always include Muddy Waters and Louis Jordan in that conversation.

Dave, are you gonna jump in on the new one...the Cm7 Jazz Blues?

I'm gonna try to record a major key version today in between students.

I gave it a listen while at work, no guitar in hand. I'll check it out again tonight and see if I have something for you.
Edit: Road Dogs rehearsal tonight so my plate is full. Maybe Thurs.

Just by sheer coincidence, the same time that Col. Aquino managed to get Satanic worship officially sanctioned by US Army.
The col. was also published papers advocating the use of psyops on the USA domestic population.

was the devil responsible for those funky eyebrows too?
