Dissonance is an important element in music, but too much of it is painful.

In one of my more recent songs, the guitar player was a little out of tune on the top E string.

I purposely chose not to recut it because the dissonance added to the feel of a sad song....but it probably wouldn't have worked on a different song. Again, there is no such thing as a perfectly tuned acoustic instrument. If you were to check the tuning of an individual instrument in almost any orchestra you'd be amazed how "off" they are, but when all the instruments play together the combined sound is pleasing. Again, that is the magic of music.

But one violin played out of tune is worse than a cat scratching your eyeballs out.

I can not stand Rap when it is out of tune. Of course I can not stand rap period. Rap is Rape without the E.

tell ya what...when you record a song as brilliant as "Strawberry Fields" w production work on the level of George Martin.....get back to me.

maybe my computer clock did the out of tune thing or bad intonation thing, I played San Ysidro Strut on a 50 dollar Grenada gut string and am I proud of that? no..

then why not just man up and accept that your gtr was out of tune as was pointed out to you by half a dozen musicians here? why try to deny it...and then lay it off pretending you were going for an artful microtonal approach? or blaming an out of tune tuning fork?

and only NOW you finally admit it might have been a problem w the cheap gtr you used??? no, wait...it was your computer clock!!!!

if anybody can hate it that much for being out of tune, and yet hordes of people eat up AC/DC outta tune stuff then I can only believe it is a conspiracy.. payback? for not saying good job on everything that is posted? yes?..

who said they "hate it"?

here's EXACTLY what i said about your out of tune playing....

Planetguy wrote:dayne, it's very hard for me to listen to this stuff when the intonation is so off. i don't know if you are doing a poor job tuning that nylon string gtr or if it just suffers from bad intonation.....but there are too many places where it's badly, BADLY out of tune. do you not hear it?

Planetguy wrote:you really do need to pay more attention to the intonation/tuning of your gtr. sorry for the tough love, bro but there's just no excuse for playing an out of tune instrument. :)

Planetguy wrote:
the intonation problems i hear (and you for some reason don't) are most distracting and makes it most unpleasant to listen to.

i'm not sure what you find so grievous about any of those remarks, or why you choose to feel slighted and conspired against. i tried to temper my remarks on your poor intonation as nicely as i could.

believe whatever paranoid conspiracy you like....but i would have told anyone/everyone else here who shares their music exactly the same thing were it THEIR gtr so out of tune.

and i'd hope and expect that others here would tell ME when I'M playing out of tune.

as for pats on the back for a job well done....of course, they're ALWAYS nice to hear. but you're mistaken if you think i need, or expect them from you or anyone else here.... and that i would go out of my way for "payback".

or pretending everything is in tune after half a dozen tell you otherwise!

but i want to make sure we're on the same page here.....

you are now ready to acknowledge your gtr WAS out of tune when previously you refused to admit it????

answer that ....and THEN i'll weigh in on Strawberry Fields.

No one I think is in my tree
I mean it must be high or low
That is you know you can't tune it
But it's all right
That is I think it's not too bad

POLL QUESTION:

will you listen to Strawberry Fields Forever based on it's sound and uniqueness?

or, will you not listen to it, based on it being out of tune, never-mind how cool sounding it is?

or, would you not listen to it if it was wholly in tune, because then the mystery and drama and strangeness that made it good in the first place would now be absent? :)
