I took 'Music Theory for Non-Music Majors' at McGill as an elective. All players should know some theory.

well, even at a most basic level it's helpful to yourself.... but it also makes communication that much easier w other other musicians.

i'm playing a pickup gig w a super nice guy who just recorded a "vanity cd" down in Nashville and he's hired me, the lead gtrst, and the drummer from THE 121's to back him up for his CD release party this Saturday.

he's not a band guy, but this has always been a dream of. though he's pretty green and wet behind the ears....we had a successful and productive prct getting thru his eight songs because he does have a basic nuts and bolts understanding of some theory and the lingo necessary to communicate.

for myself and anyone I play with, this was a lock stock and barrel hard rule. Now though, I've met a player who changed my mind on it. Plus, the bands I listen to go on youtube videos and say things like "I don't even know what the notes or chords are on the fretboard". Used to be cringe worthy for me. Now, not so much. Works for them.
