played mostly acoustic solo for over 30 yrs...then a friend of mine asked me to fill in cuz his bass player had just died, they'd auditioned about 30 ppl who just couldn't get it...I was 42, & had never even held one in my hand...I filled in, in my own very amateurish way, you know, just thumpin' on the roots, on that 1st gig, sweating my butt off cuz I was so nervous & unfamiliar w/the instrument

the following weeks & months, I worked very hard at coming up w/bass lines to individual tunes, then started applying them, & I got better each time we played...before I knew it, I was a "bass player" who had three groups to work in - rockabilly, hippie jam-band, & bluegrass, fer crissake - AND I was the house bass player for an open mic for over ten yrs, getting to play w/some truly great ppl ( & many many NOT-so-great )

it's been one the most rewarding things I've ever done, at least until the bands broke up & the open mic stopped...LOL...nothing lasts forever, eh?

I'm lost in the drifting sands of a musical desert now...looking frantically for the next great project...hmmm...maybe I should pick up the harmonica, or the bassoon....everyone needs one of those, right?

shoot I'm kicking myself for not having a bass when I was 9 I had a friend who knew a few rips then, I picked it up last year granted my self is maliable as I am only 23, but if I were twice my age I'd like to think that it'd still come as naturally to me, more power to anyone who picks up the real thing instead of guitar hero or whatever like that!!!

I wanted to be independant of musicians and be able to perform alone, when I had to, and practise music whenever I wanted to ( instead of just singing to tapes. So I picked up guitarplaying one year ago and have not only been playing covers sucecsfully, but have written an archive worth of songs.
I so love pplaying and singinga nd it has changed my life, it has made me a lot happier person. Still would love to ahve a band, but at least my musical life doens't stagnate being without it.

I picked up guitar 2 years ago, and admittedly felt stupid starting that late. I mean I have heard of people starting at 9... I had no musical knowledge. But now, after all of my studying and practicing, I have finally reached the point where I can solo at high speeds, understand the modes, can build chords if I have to (And struggle with it!), and know where the notes are on the guitar (Sometimes it takes a bit though to figure that out). Now I write tons of music, mostly Middle Eastern sounding.

But yeah, I wish I started much younger, then I would have tons of experience now.

But hey, in the end, it does not matter. I am enjoying the instrument, I love playing, and that is all that counts.

Peace out, GuitarAnatomy.

I'm 24 right now and have been playing bass on and off since I was 13. I say "on and off" because despite owning a bass and knowing songs on it, it wasn't until a few years ago that I sat down and took time to learn the instrument. Before I would just hammer out notes with a pick but now I actually have proper technique and style. Recently I picked up a guitar and started learning keys as well. Granted I wish I would have started earlier, but it's fun learning new instruments in my down time and doing it on my own accord.
