I posted a short snippet of music, and would like some critics to pipe up. I'm not sure if the idea is worth persuing... but for some crazy reason I thought it would be fun to throw it out there and see if I can garner any abuse.
Very out of the norm for what I would usually try to do.

But my real question: What do you fine people use for home recording?
I have fashioned a ghetto/mad scientist setup at the moment which involves a tascam cd-gt1, laptop and apples 'garage band'... so the sound quality isn't that great.
I am not experienced at ze home recording.

As a demonstration of your playin' skills for the purpose of getting the attention of other players to get together with, I say "GOOD JOB". You have "one up" on all the people who have not taken the time learn how to put ANYTHING up on their profile audio player. If you lived in my neck of the woods, I'd be contacting you for a jam session.

Your two chord ditty with the guitar melody overlay sounds like a potential intro to a good song. Nothing to be gained by a hypercritical analysis at this point.

The use of metaphors in your profile shows signs of a good songwriter in regards to lyric composition as well. (..."Raise the goblet of rock"...)

I've done my share of recording on many levels over the years, from "reel to reel" to "digital" but I must plead ignorance on much of the new technology. The are many people on this forum that are "Up to speed" on the topic, so I'll shut up now , and odds are we'll both learn something!

Not too bad...Sounds alittle middy (canny) through my near fields...How are you interfacing to the computer?..Always rememeber, the best sound card in the world wont produce good results if you have weak or poor quality preamps..I run Cool Edit using a 8CH brain...Now I take a hit right off the bat with the -10db rec.out high resistance output...BUT, Thats all Ive got right now ..I use it also becuase its so much simplier having drums , bass, keys, guitar and mics EQ'd and hooked up all at once...Try some EQing and mess with your compressor a bit...Im a noob too...This is a MUCH different realm than the old analog days..Ya might wanna check out this page...

It's just a small stereo cable, ran from the line out hole on the tascam into the Line-In hole on the laptop. Stock powerbook soundcard, circa 2003.
(And yes, 'hole' is the proper technical jargon around these here parts.)

I didn't see 'Gona Get Ya' on his page, but I checked out the stuff that
was there. I like it.

He's got a lot of material and changes out frequently. I'm sure it'll come by again.

The first three songs on my profile are live recordings of various bands I've been in. Two were recorded "in studio ". The first song was direct from vinyl to computer.

Spell on You (the most recent) is a cover and was recorded live onto Minidisk at practice.

Caledonia was preprogrammed on my old Yamaha SY55 and dumped on a cheap cassette, and ultimately onto the computer. (It's an old Louis Jordan cover)

All the drumming is real with the exception of "Caledonia"

In the future , It is my intent to record my band gigs live on a minidisc player and hopefully set up a website on BandVista, where my music can be heard by all on an ongoing basis.
The professional recording studio has served my needs very well in the past, however I feel it is time to step into the 21st century of do it yourself production.

When I finally get a solid band together, I think I will try the same thing. (Or something very similar)
I don't want to turn into the recording guy in the band. I'd like to focus on my
musical contributions instead.
I know I have to learn more on this do it yourself stuff, but live band tracks sounds better for people just to get familiar with the band.
We can all duck into the studio at some point for some high quality fodder, if need be.
