radiobuzzed,
You neglected to mention what you play, and what you like to listen to.
.
I play Jazz - Blues - Funk - R&B - Boogie - other styles - a lot of cross-over-type stuff. Many differing rhythms, some finger-picking . . .
Most of it is fast-paced, intricate, and upbeat.
.
I don't listen much to other people's music.
I write music. There are too many 'two-note' songs out there, and they tend interfere with my creativity. Some songs sound like video games to me . . .
(TV commercials drive me nuts, because of their so-called 'music')
.
I've found that whatever style of music I listen too tends to show up in my own originals, good or bad.
Whatever I listen to resonates in my head, and becomes part of me.
When I listen to music, I don't so much listen to groups, as much as individual songs.
I listen to things that have good harmonies, clean sound, something creative or different about them. And happy - sounding. I don't like angry music, or rap (which is angry chanting).
Music is emotion. You are what you listen to . . .
.
Off the top of my head - I used to listen to Yes, ELO, Aerosmith, Skynrd, Jeff Beck, some kinds of Jazz, anything on the radio that had a creative catchy sound to it . . .
Then I listened to classical music exclusivley for 2 years.
I listen now to many styles - Jazz, Funk, Rock, Celtic, Bebop, Leo Kottke, Bela & the Flecktones, and 50 others whose names I don't even know.
There IS still good stuff out there, but as my experience in music grows, my choices of what to listen to have been dwindling . . .

Most of what I like to listen to never makes it onto the airwaves . . .

I like Electronica, most classical, folk (Celtic and Polish in particular), world beat, and several fusions thereof inbetween.

Rock just bores me these days.

I love anything that rocks & makes me feel happy. The 80's hair metal is probably my favorite, because it's mostly happy party rock. I also love the old soulful blues tunes from classic divas like Etta James & Billie Holiday; acoustic folk pop from Sheryl Crow & the like; rockin' new country from Gretchen Wilson, the Dixie Chicks, & Sugarland; and beautiful, soothing, romantic classical by Vivaldi, JS Bach, & Mozart. Also, coming from a background of choruses & church choirs, I love anything with amazing vocal harmonies like En Vogue or TLC. Life can bring me down; I want my music to pick me back up.

Yeah, I heard a 'key word' there: happy.
And - En Vogue ... there's a group I haven't heard in a few years. They had a couple of songs with great harmonies . . .

for some reason I get the feeling that some people are just trying to start conversation with some threads...
Can someone ask something realistic?

En Vogue always gave me chills when I heard them; what amazing vocal blends!
I just bought the new Christina Aguilera cd, & I really love disc 2; especially "I Got Trouble." It's a Billie Holiday style blues tune I totally get lost in. I think I'm gonna get the new band to learn it & break it out at the blues jam to shake things up a bit.
BTW, Badger, isn't starting conversations what these forums are intended for?

That sounds like an awful lot of "metals," but little else...

I especially dig music that I can groove to... I have a lot of different types of "groove," and therefore listen to a lot of different music.

Start at the beginning, with some folk, (I'm particularly fond of Ani DiFranco) and work your way through jazz fusion (not the elevator jazz), and electric blues (while I like the older stuff, like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, it doesn't hold me like SRV or Clapton). Victor Wooten, especially, has me enthralled. Whether with the Flecktones or by himself, he's the most phenomenal bassist I've ever heard. (Yes, I'm including Marcus Miller, Jaco, and all the others)

Anything with a distorted guitar works, as long as it doesn't envolve 23-year-old boys whining about how mom wouldn't let them drive the BMW to school... And now everything's dark and they feel so alone... Gimme a break, I don't care how good the music is.

I grew up listening to the virtual gamut of rock, from Elvis to Kiss, and still hold a warm place in my heart for stuff like Herman's Hermits and the Animals.

Rush - what else can I say?

Billy Joel and the various Mellencamps also played a big part in my musical upbringing. 80's hair stuff is all right, especially GnR and Motley Crue. Of course, the Boss is in there somewhere. 90's grunge was my teenage years, so Alice in Chains, Nirvana, all those bands, may not have been particularly skilled, but damned if they don't hit me.

"Nu Metal" like Slipknot is all right, but Mudvayne is phenomenal. The technical skill there is just as inspiring, in its way, as Vic Wooten. I'm currently listening to Dragonforce, which is a lot like thrash metal with 80's hair vocals... Doesn't sound like it would be all that good, but I'm diggin' it.

Cradle of Filth is one of my favorite "black metal" bands, along with Meshuggah - if you need tips on how an odd time-signature band should sound, check them out. OTEP is a really creepy hardcore group, and I like them (her) a lot, and DevilDriver is just intense. Also worth mentioning is Cher and one of the Allman brothers (David, I think) son Elijah has a band named Deadsy that rocks some serious covers and has an "electronicky" dark sound, but really moves the heartstrings.

I guess that more of less sums up my carious likes... I listen to country when the girlfriend has it on in the car, but lately country hasn't impressed me a bit. I miss the late 80's and early 90's country - that was country the way it should be, in my humble opinion.

My first love is progressive rock. I thought it died back in the 80s but recently discovered it not only didn't die, it's thriving though in a non mainstream manner. I prettymuch like all styles of music as long as it's not generated by a machine. 8)
