Trump spokeswoman walks back claim that Obama started Afghan war

Donald Trump spokeswoman Katrina Pierson is backtracking her claim that President Obama took U.S. forces into Afghanistan.

“I obviously meant to say Syria and not Afghanistan,” Pierson told the Texas Tribune, according to a report published Monday.


Pierson said she meant to refer to U.S. efforts to back Syrian rebels fighting President Bashar Assad.
Pierson said in an interview Saturday on CNN that Obama brought U.S. forces into Afghanistan.

CNN's Victor Blackwell tried to get Pierson to clarify her comments during the interview, but the Trump aide said Afghanistan multiple times.

"Barack Obama went into Afghanistan, creating another problem," Pierson claimed.

"That was Obama's war, yes," Pierson added when pressed.

After a commercial break, Blackwell corrected Pierson.

"I thought we were talking about the founding of ISIS," Pierson responded. "ISIS came out of the Obama side of the war. Is that not a fact?"

Former President George W. Bush led the initial invasion into Afghanistan in 2001, eight years before Obama took office.

Pierson blamed her CNN comments on a technical glitch, telling the Tribune that she could hear a voice echoing in her earpiece during the segment, distracting her.

Earlier this month, Pierson admitted that she wrongly blamed Obama for the death of a U.S. soldier in Iraq in 2004, years before he became president.

Pierson also claimed this month that 1 million soldiers had been wounded in Iraq. The Trump campaign corrected that figure. The number of wounded is in the tens of thousands.

Pierson told the Tribune that she has done more than 600 interviews on behalf of Trump and misspoke "0.03" percent of the time.
