interesting looking gtr, but turn it around so we can see the three pc bolt on neck. as it is, that looks like a set neck from that photo.

Got one for you-
Would you rather have a 3-piece neck or a repaired headstock?? :?:

i've nothing against laminated necks. they are stronger and less prone to twisting than one pc necks. i'd say THAT is the advantage... not so much the reduced danger to headstock breakage.

but really....how many FENDERS have you seen w broken/repaired headstocks??? that lack of a "break angle" at the headstock? ...yep Leo got that right. (pretty appropriate it being called a "break angle"!)

my '67 Starfire bass has a three pc. neck and my Warwick Stage One Streamer has a five pc neck ( neck thru body maple/wenge/maple/wenge/maple )

my take on it....

the broken necks on Gibby's have nothing to do with the fact they aren't laminated from three (or more) pieces.

the reason they break is the extreme "break angle" at the nut. that puts a lot of stress on the joint. would a laminated neck help? meh. maybe. maybe not.

but my point about FENDERS is this... they are single pc necks (skunk stripe doesn't count) and you never see a Fender w a broken headstock.....and that's because they don't have the break angle of Gibbys.

btw...i own two gtrs w headstock repairs....my '36 MARTIN O-17 and that red Washburn HB35 (335 copy) you see me playing in the recent vids. would a laminated neck have prevented their injuries....who can say? somehow i doubt it.

i've heard/read it two ways. that gibson changed to maple for the additional strength but i've also heard that it was done because it was cheaper using domestic maple than importing mahogany.

i suspect it was a little of both.

BTW....volutes-schmolutes! my Washburn HB35 w the repaired headstock? yeah...it has a very nice sized volute, thank you very much! :x

Ive been playing a neck thru - '77 Ibanez Musician - for bout 6 years and its a love/hate relationship
The neck changes w the seasons and has a slight twist in it
I get some great Jerry Tones from it though

I picked up my buddy's Tele a few weeks back ; it was so sparkly and plucky sounding compared to my axe

Been thinking of going back to my Strat and Twin combo lately for the early 70's GD sound

:D

greetings DG... nice to see you poking your nose in around these parts!

that grt sure looks like it was Alembic-sized. i'm sure you probably mentioned it at some point...did you do the work on it? i gotta get ME a gtr w a green jewel light on it!

I'm guessing that's an Ibanez Artist next to your axe, then?

Now that they've reissued them, does your bassist play a modded Guild Starfire? or perhaps a Modulus?
