just checked the 220/12...and other than being finished w a nice tolex instead of the fabric that my cats long ago shredded....it's appears to be the exact same amp w exactly the same layout in the front.
that...plus it's 220 watts instead of 180. and keep in mind that's 220 watts working the amp at 8 ohm using the internal spkr...couple it w another standalone cab and you're now down to 4 ohms and your amp is giving more _uck for the buck.
i'ts easily carried the truckstop gig...the 180 and one of those EDEN cabs . there's no bass in the PA...just vocals and kick drum, so i'm carrying a good sized room from the stage. and trust me, THE 121's are too often a LOUD BAND.
re. Bill's rig, keep in mind that what you're hearing there is rougly 80% of Bill and MAYBE 20% rig. he sounds very much just like that on his smaller Hartke Kickback or his very small SWR prct amp...i forget the model but it's like 50 watts into a 10" amp/combo.
the rig he's using there is a four x ten cab he built (he had dreams of building these and selling them when he retired....hasn't happened yet. and he was gonna be doing the same w about a half dozen basses he's been in the process of bldg (and stalled out on). he's got some very nice pieces glued up in the neck/body stage. both some neck thru's and some bolt ons*. remember....he built that bass he's using and it is up there w some very high end basses i've played.
he's using a very large (maybe three or four rackspace) heavier than a boat anchor SWR.....maybe an SWR 900? maybe it's a 1200...i dunno, he's got two of 'em the one lesser model that's like 750 watts and this one that's around 1000 watts. i've had to borrow ea of them and hated them both!
i couldn't get anything close to "my tone" and everything just sounded really "processed" and puny while at the same being STOOOPID LOUD>
Dayne...were i you and that was your budget.....yeah, i feel very comfortable recommending that ASHDOWN 220. if you can find somewhere that has one near you (most unlikely) it'd be great to compare the 15" model w the 12") more weight but you might prefer the response of that bigger spkr.
tell ya what though.... i regularly play a bass w a low B string ( and i USE it!) and not only does it handle that low stuff...it sounds great down there. you shouldn't have any problem get enough low end going on there. if you do...blame the bass!
*thread idea!
