It's true these aren't overly complex and leave good openings for improvisation--like jazz should.

for the band i try to bring in tunes that are pretty straightfwd form wise. and i like to have some little fall back safety net section or phrase to fall back on somewhere in there.... a unison line, or..... it's very much a Horace Silver thing and he was masterful at pulling that off in many of his tunes.

I had (what I thought was) a good tune workin' in my noggin a couple weeks ago, had worked out the changes...but didn't write anything down. A commercial w/ some insipid ditty came on the TV and washed it away. And now it's gone...

LOL...oh, man doncha HATE when that happens! last wk i came up w a little way of rearranging the order of notes in a minor 7th arpeggio and i KNEW i'd never remember it, so i actually took 30 seconds out my busy sched to write it down. i was trying to remember what i had come up w and couldn't.....then i had to tear up the music room to find my note! found it....and i almost hurt myself patting myself on the back! ( i hadn't stretched and warmed up properly)

I like the vibes; reminds me of Spyro Gyra.

i'm a fan of dave samuels (mallet man in Spyro)...he's a great player but much of their stuff is a little too much like "hot tub jazz" for me. it is a blast playing vibes and people sure seem to enjoy hearing them, and no doubt really dig the visual aspect of them as well.

And your guitar licks would work well w/ a clean piano.

Like you, I'm having problems finding venues that will pay jazz/blues musicians. But I'm not giving up by any means. I'm hustling.

Well, I'd suggest you guys move to the jazz hub of the mid west (yeah, right).... MID MO, but we don' need no competition for gigs! Aug isn't as busy as the 8 gigs we played last month, but i feel pretty good having 5 PJAZZ on the calendar!!!

Actually--statistically--the most records/CDs are bought by the 12-18 age group (I haven't seen any stats for sites like iTunes and the like, but I bet it isn't radically diff.), and the 20-somethings are most likely to pay to see live music. The former explains the popularity of boy bands and Taylor Swift, the latter, alternative (which, as it turns out, is becoming more mainstream every day), hip-hop, club beats and whatever other genre gets them ga-ga. It's a bleak prospect for anyone who doesn't fit into those neat boxes. My age group stays home (going to a club can be dangerous) and listens to whatever they bought back in the days when we still mattered to the marketing folks. These days we're too busy spending our disposable income on health care and the grandkids. Or, in my case, restoring an old '94 Z28.

Trust me, it ain't happenin'--least not till I get some more $$ to throw at it. Blew a tranny seal a while back--ironically, on the way back from Sarasota to get the parts to repair my Roland. I figure about another 6K should do it: rebuild the tranny, new exhaust, new (leather) interior. Had the money, but wasted it on a new roof. Hate it when life gets in the way of a good plan.

DP- why you pissing off money on a Chevy when you could buy a B-3 or a Rhodes or a Clavinet...

The weight factor is a big deterrent. A B-3 (and Leslie) weighs far more than I wanna deal with; likewise a Rhodes or Clav. I'll play for free, but there are freight charges for the cartage. I'd need to put a hitch on my SUV and buy a trailer--not gonna happen--and besides, I'm way too old to be huffin' that kinda weight.

The 2 things in life I really enjoy are playing off-the-wall jazz and cruisin' in a fast ride. To play the jazz I need to interface w/ other biological units, and that's always a crapshoot--esp. 'round here. But cruisin' in a fast ride is a solitary pursuit, and only requires the fast ride. I already have a Roland & Korg, so no need to buy anything else unless I find some biological units that can agree on the music; 'compromise' down here seems to mean I play what I'm told, how I'm told, and keep any ideas to myself. A fast ride is far more forgiving, and lets me go/do what I want.

Nah, Schmed--I like 'em both. Had a '67 289 Hypo Mustang at one point and really loved it. But it was a northern car and eventually rusted away to nothing. I love it when Ford & GM compete w/ each other for the muscle-car dollar: the consumer wins. I'd go w/ either, but just happen to have the Z right now.
