Planet Jazz played a restaurant gig last night. Total blast...small, but very appreciative crowd and we did some fun exploring. New strings on my EASTMAN had me in the tone zone...decent recording, blah, blah, blah.

but here's my fave part about last night....

ok, we're playing and about 4 tables back is a group of about 6. there's this lady in her 40's....really watching and digging the band. so, i'm making a lot of eye contact w her. we're smiling and nodding approval at one another and she's following whoever is soloing and digging the band's interaction.

dumbass that I am...it takes me about three songs like this before i realize SHE'S DEAF!!!!!

so, i give her my standard line whenever i notice a deaf person at a gig...i sign to her...."Sooooo, you're here for the MUSIC, right!!???"

and as is always the case, this cracks her up as she signs back to me..."yes, that's EXACTLY why I'm here!"

they stayed for the rest of the set, and i was letting her know the names of the songs as we started them up.

they leave after awhile, drop some bucks in the tip jar and as she walks by signs "thank you SO MUCH, i REALLY enjoyed the music!"

our biggest fan of the night...and she's DEAF! YA GOTTA LOVE IT!

hey "Ready"...let me ask your expert advice as a great promoter and marketer.....I'm thinking of including this on all our promo material:

PLANET JAZZ ....BELOVED BY DEAF PEOPLE EVERYWHERE!

whatcha think? good idea???? ...or should i keep it a secret? :D

My brother in law played a gig at a school for the deaf. He said it was the only time anyone ever told him, "turn the bass all the way up!"

when i was working at MO School For the Deaf we had to come up with Halloween games for the kiddies. my bit was musical chairs! the kids would circle the chairs and when i lifted the headstock of my bass up high that meant "get your ass in a chair PDQ"....a deaf teacher who i liked a lot always planted her ass on my bass amp!

good times. good times!

not impressed....i used to play with Haggard as well.

we're talking about Morty Haggard, right? When he wasn't singing for his supper he used to sell kosher knishes from his pushcart on Delancy Street. Same cat?

That guy was a real mensch and sold the best knishes in the tri-state area!

mike, i have no idea what her actual hearing is.

she might be "stone deaf" or only suffer from minor hearing loss in which case she could actually hear music at some level (then again she DID say she "really enjoyed the music" so that might point to the former!)

and even stone deaf, cranked...well she'd certainly feel it.

i had a black friend who was deaf but she had a fair amount of hearing. she's a real good athlete and we used to play one on one b-ball whenever we had a chance. trust me, these were serious knock down go for the throat deals!!!

anyway, she would listen to country music (really loud!) and i'd give her $hit....."what's wrong with you?!?!!you're a black deaf woman listening to COUNTRY MUSIC??? You are VERY confused!"
