yep, when your internet security suite goes bad and you are on Windows XP wirth dial-up , you have 2 choices, continue on with no security whatsoever cause the avg people said they could not use remote view on a dial-up with XP which they no longer support, so I had to break out the new puter sitting in it's original box for years, because at the time when I ordered it, I though my then puter was about to expire w/ BSOD symptoms, after I ordered this one, found it was malware that was causing problem, and fixed the infestation and everything back to normal, but years later, I had to break it out, and I hate trying to get the printer and camera software to work like on the old puter, driver updates has not allowed every thing to work like before? prolly because of Windows 7 is quite a bit different of "layout" stuff is different.. can't get recording software to work at all, and the bandwidth is expensive and limited to 1 gb for 15 bucks and it's draining fast cause no meter to disprove their accounting of "usage" LOL :D xto

just in time for Windows 7 to be outdated in 2 or 3 years.. thanks Mike.. maybe I will upgrade if possible to the latest Ableton Live Lite Edition .. but I buy a data card at wallyworld and believe the 1 GB minus what I have used already won't be enough to get that massive file downloaded w/o running out of data, I wonder? :D

To run most recording software, I'd recommend a minimum of 4G RAM (6 or 8 are better). You can do it with 2G or even 1G if you don't record a lot of tracks at once, don't use many plug-ins that are memory intensive (like reverbs and virtual instruments).

Mike, do you realize people on LIMITED bandwidth subscription plans like wi-fi hotspot plans are really at a disadvantage? I have heard many people in rural amerika like me using similar "plans" are bitching because Microsoft is charging their bandwidth plans to download Windows 10 for "free" it really ain't free when it costs 20 dollars to download it.. and it will eat up roughly $20.00 just to download the latest Ableton Live Lite recording software package.. since i am registered with a product purchased previously at least they wont charge me an additional $149.00 or more for the software.. might be more than $149.00? and you get the best out there German engineering and many say it's way better than the free stuff, surely there is a catch with the free recording software (audacity) since I was long ago taught nothing in life is really free always a catch somewhere down the pike..

yep, I LOVES me my high speed internet now, but it ain't cheap to operate..you even have to shut off the auto play videos on facebook or your data will get ate up in a few days.. $50.00 fro 5 gb straight talk goes really fast if you don't pay attention to what you are doing..

You could always move out of the sticks! My internet (no data limits) costs me over $100 a month - FIOS 20 down/5 up service, includes local phone landline.

BTW- don't update to Win 10. It's an improvment on Win8, but not 7. Turn off the automatic update option in Windows so you don't get accidentally bit.

Hope you got a good deal on that Dell. We've had 3 here (me 2, wife 1) and all of them cooked harddrives and motherboards in 4-5 years (not worth salvaging). At work, they replaced all the Dell laptops with HPs.

I got another Dell because the 1st Del l( Dimension 2400 )was still running great after 13 years.. it's still a good computer but was not considered as a good upgrade switching from Windows XP to Windows 7 cause of various factors..I am still considering finding a cheap monitor at some auction and using it as a dedicated recording studio monitor cause it still works great with the Ableton & Gear Box still installed.. but it will take up valuable space in which i can use to house inventory for ebay/swap meet selling..LOL :D

I love living far away from the major metro centers. when the sh*t hits the fan, and it will.. I will be more able to survive than the inner city and suburban dwellers.. I can draw water from my well quite literally when the pulse bomb knocks out the grid, I have enough available firewood to cook meals for years, when it comes.. I have the finances to buy solar cells when the sh*t hits the fan, I expect I will be able to still drive to get them before all supplies and services are shut down..with food, water, fuel(firewood), and a little electricity I will be good to go.. trouble is, will Earth even be worth living on when the population has been cut down to 20% of what it is now today?.. LOL!!
