Brian has great ideas on sound and sound perception.

I messed around with 3D recording back in the early 90's. This was my first experiment "Broadjam" http://www.bandmix.com/rgmixproject/
Brian has always trailed me.

Quite familiar w/ the album but thanks for the story. Hadn't heard that one.

That's why there have been some atrocious remasters of the album on CD. I saw the Legacy Remaster used for 7 bucks and lucked out.

Thanks. That was their first and only foray into major label territory. Made amazing sounding albums, but I like the stuff they record in their rehearsal studio in LA just as much. There's always something askew in their music. The beats are never straight forward. The lyrics are mumbled nonsense. They cover their tracks with rambling stylophone solos. After you're locked into that groove, you don't view Metallica or other metal the same.
They're huge fans of Miles Davis and Judy Garland. They're tapped into some other vein than these slick corporate rockers.

Eno first started w/ Robert Fripp in 1973 creating ambient mixes.
What were you doing in '73???

1970 I made my first electronic song with a signal generator and Rhodes electronic piano "Predating the Moog" and a Revox reel to reel. Got an A+ from the music teacher for never hearing or seeing that technique before.

You know, you probably have a very valid point there Mark. I started thinking about the neo-classical/jazz concept and possibly revisiting this in the future and actually composing those lines. If I do this, I would have to drop the rhythm guitar altogether which got me to thinking, what would this sound like w/o the rhythm guitar?? I went to the computer but I didn't save the mix so I wasn't able to actually preform this task to see for myself but I think you're right.

The piece could stand on it's own w/o the rhythm track and written for the 2 melody lines and bass for piano. Even then, I would have to cut out some of the parts to make it possible to play on one piano. So from a classical standpoint, it IS too busy to write for piano (and I'm not even considering your track). I do want to pursue my parts even further, again, when I get the time. In the meantime, I'll see if I can play something more suitable to augment the rhythm guitar. Add a bass line that has more 'swing' and less counterpoint. Then I may kick it back to you for the solo part. Trying to play Gypsy Jazz solos is what ruined my hand for 10 years. I'm not going down that road again. [

I'll see if I have time tomorrow to pull this off and if I do, I'll e-mail you an MP3. OK?? :D

Not so great minds think alike!

When you mentioned Bach's Fugue in Cm and compared your approach to that, my first thought was....that's a two part invention (as in written for TWO voices) and your mix of "Previous Offense" has FOUR! ...my rhythm gtr, your two melody gtrs, and a bass line.

I was gonna suggest you remove my rhythm gtr part, but i didn't want you to get the wrong the impression that "i wanted out" of this because i disliked what you did!

Gypsy Jazz, classical, country, rock, blues.....whatever, space and breathing room are highly subjective and personal. It's something that many of us (i include myself) struggle with. As i've gotten older i've been able to pare down my approach to things musical. (mostly)

I see you've sent me the latest mix w just the rhythm gtr and new bass line. i'm looking forward to checking it out.

Ahh, ok--if we're discussing Volbeat's mix quality, dunno. I only listened to it on youtube, on a laptop, and as someone noted, you really need to hear the uncompressed version to discern the mix quality--at least I do, anyway. I don't see me buying Volbeat's CD anytime soon...ever.

I had never recorded/mixed my own stuff until about a year ago--I had always just played what I was told--and I'm still trying to figure it out; sometimes I'll mix something 40+ times before I think it's...tolerable. Like Schmeddy, I'm using Audacity--good for a beginner, but limited. But I can't see spending $600+ for fancy software when I don't know what I'm doing. And since I'm playing all the instruments myself, booking time in a real studio could get mighty pricey--esp. to record music no one wants to hear, anyway. Besides, it's kinda fun shaping sound and learning about all the various effects, even if I'm not very good at it.

I have a friend who has something approaching a real studio, and his mixes always sound really good, very high quality. I've tried to pump him for info on this or that, but haven't gotten very far. Likewise when I ask him to critique anything I've done. I suspect he doesn't want to tell me it sux and risk offending me, but I've got thick skin. After all, I'm only recording music I always wanted to record, but could never find anyone else to join me. So I guess I'm resigned to trial-and-error.

I could already make OK sounding home demos when I found this book at guitar center.

It helped me cut out a lot of ambient noise and distortion from my mixes. Check it out. Lots of good advice.

Kudos to you!! :D
Ever listen to Don Preston? He was an early experimenter in electronica back around the same time. Here's an example of some of his work from '71. The earliest recording of his experimentation I have heard dates back to '68 or '69.
