When I hear squeaky clean stuff, it makes me sick. Kenny G and the smooth jazz bunch is the epitome of this. Everything is PERFECT, every hair in place. No emotion. No inflection. BS.
you know....there have been some really egregious and misleading genre names....hard bop, salsa....and maybe worst of all...."smooth jazz". these are all labels that were invented not by the musicians but by the people peddling product.
"smooth jazz" or as i refer to it...hot tub jazz, is nothing but instrumental pop music that might have a horn in it. sorry, but the fact that it's instrumental and maybe has a sax or trumpet does NOT make it jazz.
as far as "every hair in place"....not a problem for me. Duke Ellington anyone? Oliver Nelson? Miles/Gil Evans' "Birth of The Cool"? Bill Evans? etc.... and we don't even have to get into classical music!
that's not the problem for me w "smooth jazz". for the most part and to my ears it's just dumbed down, watered down vacuous product to sell to the masses.
BTW....my older brother brought home "Hooker and Heat" when i was 14 or 15...and oh, man...we WORE THAT RECORD OUT! i still love that album. as much for the conversating between songs as the music! it's a classic.
