good morning Displaced Pianist.. got ya..it's erased.. sorry 'bout that, .. looked at your page and listened to Goodbye Pork Pie Hat thinking it would sound like Max Middleton Jeff Beck's keyboardist, but still very pleased with the results, Charles Mingus version?/.. the tune "New Frontier" is off "The Nightfly"(Donald Fagen) i think? big fan of GAUCHO.. studio people use the Nightfly as a barometer because of it's exceptional digital recording quality..

Brubeck is an artist and a pioneer we will need some music in The New Frontier..love it!! :D

Gaucho and The Nightfly rule. Could never get into Aja, though.

Have mixed feelings re: Porkpie. It's ok, but I used a drum machine, which kinda makes it difficult--esp. when the drums don't come in until well into the tune. I would prefer much more movement, it's a bit too...staid. Drum machines just can't respond to feel. Then again, it was written for a dead friend, so... But I like the crescendo, and the interlude fits, anyway. I love Beck's version, but don't have a guitarist around here who can play it--or who wants to, maybe.

I do a fair amount of Fagen's comps--they're all interesting (even Aja--ha!) and my voice fits well enough (I hope) to pull it off--the only way I can get guys to play it. Btw, I pulled that awful psuedo-guitar track off NF--I played it on my Korg, and it sounded like a raw midi file. I have a friend down here who is willing to do some guitar tracks for me, so maybe that will come to pass.

But alas, the good folks in the Bay area just don't get it. It's all blues, death metal and Lynyrd Skynyrd. There are days when I seriously wonder why I'm still here...

jazz guy...bluegrass guy...retro country guy....blues guy.....

have you ever seen...i think it was a VH1 "Storytellers" bit on the making of AJA? it's super cool. Becker and Fagan could quit their day jobs and do stand up. there's also some very cool stuff from the supporting players.

Aja was groundbreaking. They featured it on "Greatest Rock Albums" (ironically) on VH1--I think it's still on Netflix. I still play Josie, Deacon and Black Cow--when I can get the guys to humor me. But not at a gig. Oh no...

I know it's the band's favorite. The fans favorite. The critics favorite. Just not mine. I preferred Gaucho. I don't even listen to this stuff anymore. You should hear what my peers say about Steely Dan. Or better yet, you should be glad you don't hear it.
Enjoyed the new version Jook. Not sure why we need 4 concurrent threads about one song, but that's not my call.

The secret to Maj 7 chords is to play more of them as you add more distortion.
