Not necessarily. The Magic Band were on food stamps and were actually arrested and jailed for shoplifting food during that rehearsal period. The Stones were tootin' it up the nose and staying drunk.
I can also take an average beginner on guitar and teach him the Stones song in a few lessons. I didn't learn how to play that dissonant sh*t until I was in my 30s and started playing jazz guitar. I had to get into advanced theory to figure that one out. So it boils down to $$$ and work ethic.
i think you just made my point jook! so what's the common denominator you're mentioning there? you're comparing two very different approaches to two very different types of music.
ya don't like "apples and oranges"? how about grapes and bananas then??!!!!

look, there's no doubt you CAN show a beginner the chords to a Stones song and they can hack away it, but is it gonna have the groove and grease.....the pocket? the tone? unlikely.
and really....i couldn't care less that the stones were doing large amounts of drugs when recording that album. it sounds great. feels great. so what they had more more money than Beefheart's crew..... sh*t, they had more money than most...so? i don't see your point.
you seem put out that they didn't have their sh*t all tidy and rehearsed.
that's what i was trying to say.....if you play "through composed 'avante garde' music" where it's all scripted and written out....hell yeah, you need to rehearse and have that shite wired.
but if you're playing greasy Stones type rock....nah.
not if you have a bunch of great FEEL players (and THAT's what the Stones were about) then you DON'T rehearse and plan your every move. it's that loosey goosey "let the tape roll roll and we'll get something" vibe that makes "Sticky Fingers" so great.
BREAD IS GREAT!
