hey mike....i stumbled on this and upon seeing rick danko's bass thought of you!

i recall you speaking lovingly about your Ampeg AEB. Danko sure sounds great on his. what a great player (and singer he was). amazing to be able sing like/play like that......on fretless no less!

danko and levon helm just might be my favorite r&r rhythm section.

Mark - sweet to see the old gal in action! And Rick Danko to boot. I'd forgotten...

Two others I can think of are Dick Cavett's bass man (name?) and Boz Burrell of Crimson and Bad Company.

I've only played the big stand up bass three times in my life but I got it - I got why folks like it so much. It's the sound, unbearably precisely the sound of bass. And even though it's ungainly as hell the fell is really sweet. And the Ampeg feels like that, Truly a bass man's bass. (disclaimer: never played the Ampeg fretless)

I'm gonna have to rob a bank or something soon. I want one of those. I also want a rick and I saw a Gibson has an Explorer Bass which pushed my metal gland so hard that my skin turned a bright blue and I began shrieking Celtic war cries for some reason. 8)

cheers

mike, are you referring to the Ampeg Baby bass or just a straight up acoustic upright? i've only got to play one Baby Bass...super cool beasts, but the one i played (i believe they're all like that ) had real quick decay/ no sustain which is probably why they became the gold standard for 95% of the latin/afro-cuban bassplayers.
