OAS? ...old age syndrome?

it's PLANET JAZZ and yes, you're correct... we're in the process of mixing down stuff for our next upcoming cd.

got your email...and all is good on that. by all means...go for it, my friend!

now, i'm off to do a 2-5 solo gtr winery gig at a new (for me) place. it'll likely hit 75 degrees shortly so i'll be playing outside. and believe me...that doesn't usually (read: EVER!) happen in February in Mid MO!!!

Three hours solo?? Man, you're a tough cookie!

well, pretty much all the solo restaurant and winery gigs i've ever played have been 3 hrs. last wk i did play a solo date for Vals Day that was two hrs and that was nice.

I liked those 'atmosphere' jobs where I could improvise non-stop and mix up pieces of different #s and flow from one to another.

that's exactly how i approach it....taking advantage of being able to go wherever i want w regards to tempos and playing rubato....spinning one song into another....etc. the freedom IS great, but the solo stuff remains my least favorite gig. i'm all about being a band guy and i miss the "conversation" and interplay. then too, i miss the surprises other participants bring.

That was fun and believe it or not people ARE listening to you, even if they are rapping and socializing. Suddenly stop playing and see what happens!!

agreed. i learned that on my very first solo gig. i was playing inside at a winery to a loud crowd very much into "their thing"......which is fine. i get that. anyway, i'm playing and it feels like NO ONE is listening at all. then on break i go over to the bar, and this guy who was yakking away the whole time tells me how much he enjoyed my playing, and thought the Black Sabbath quotes were great. then someone a few bar stools down adds.....yeah, and that was a riot when you threw in that bit from "Down On The Corner!".

hmmmmm. i was sure NO ONE was listening and it really opened my eyes...there's always SOMEONE listening!

Really, it may be one of the easier and most fulfilling jobs a musician can perform (if it's an hour or two!!). You're not 'front-and-center' but you still are directly influencing the mood of a group of people. It lacks ego and concentrates on the true art form of expression and mood.
(plus you don't have to split @ the end of the day!!) Hah!! :D

well, i don't find it nearly as rewarding as band gigs.....but it is rewarding....just in a different way, i suppose. and it is challenging...esp going for three hrs! i do feel fortunate in that i approach it entirely as a "musician" and not as an 'entertainer'. nothing wrong w being an entertainer or a musician/entertainer, but when i'm playing solo and there's people yakking away and doing "their thing"...i always count my blessings that i don't have to try to engage them w banter ("hey, how's everyone doing tonight?" "here's a song from..."etc) and i thank my lucky stars i'm not trying to sing for crowds like that!

Ahhh.....c'mon Marky.

You know how I approach this? I ALWAYS think of Neil Young and his Mickey Mouse vocals. Or think about Dylan. Both were GREAT songwriters but they definitely had quirky singing styles.
If they can pull it off and sell millions of albums.........

oh, it's not my singing abilites that prompted that comment.....it's having to interact (singing/talking) to an indifferent crowd that i'm talking about.

if no one is paying all that much attention as i'm sitting on my ass playing gtr it's no big whoop...but if i'm crooning tunes and trying to schmooze that same room????? that'd REALLY suck (for me).

for the record....i'm a big fan of dylan's and young's vocals (well, more so their early stuff).....both are great examples (IMO) of excellent SINGERS who don't have great VOICES. much in the same vein of Armstrong, Durante, Cocker, etc......none of those cats had great VOICES but damn....they could SING.

what a makes a great singer? for me.....it's a few things:

timing/phrasing (probably THE most important thing)
dynamics
vibrato (where/when/how much)
how a phrase is ended....(w or w/o vibrato-falling off pitch wise-last note dynamics-etc)
emotional content/sincerity
ornamentation

"real stuff". in pop music i don't hear it at all.

i think studio technology is largely to blame for lowering the bar and not only leveling the playing field.....but also leaving great, gaping sinkholes (stinkholes?) in it as well.

the absence of "bands" playing their instruments in the studio???? i don't hear a "band" playing on any of the current pop stuff and latest star of the week mega hit.

in the hands of capable musicians who have something to say, the studio has always been a great pallet. but now? too many hacks are able to put the most dumbed down, non grooving, quantized, and sanitized crap out there and the masses line up to swallow it.

aaaaaaaaaargh. don't get me started! (too late)
