Reverend Horton Heat is a band that I've seen 7 times and they introduced me to the term "psychobilly". They play pretty much gear from the 50s and crank up the distortion for effect in parts of their songs. They also mix in some other stuff with rockabilly, like Hank Williams/ Buck Owens country.

On your monitoring issue - can you set up the monitoring so the drums are in one ear, the pre-recorded tracks are in the other ear?

It's spot on. If you haven't figured this out, it's on the backbeat. The only thing happening on the downbeat is the snare drag, which is missing in some places because of the hearing problem. The back beat on the snare is drifting back and forth between the kick and the crack directly behind the kick, This is happening when you hear the quick boom-pop!

Then toward the last quarter of the song I pop the snare and the kick on the downbeat.. I started drifting back to my old NOLA style habits.

You guys that play a lot of straight up eighths have to remember that that practice didn't start until the Beatles hit the scene. Old timey rock, blues & jazz didn't have a straight feel. Everything developed from 'swing' which was never played straight up. That's why I'm telling you I'm not a rock drummer because I can't play that straight feel. I try to but it just isn't in my blood. Playing fast tempo straight eighths just doesn't float my boat.

You need to make a trip down to NOLA or watch some of Stanton Moore's or Johnny Vidacovich's demos on YouTube to catch my drift on this one.

And NO.......this isn't an excuse for what you 'deem' as sloppy drumming. It's a style that goes back to the fifties and beyond. If you don't believe me, ask Mr. Idiot's opinion on this subject. He's well versed in this subject.
.. many critics of Keith Moon's drumming style claimed he was not keeping straight time, but it was just the fact his drum rolls were not like standard issue drummers.. in my opinion he is maybe the best drummer I have ever heard, cause of his style which was not "straight forward"

what mike said, jook. and there are a few other spots where i'm hearing the drums drift from the rhythm gtr even earlier.

no, it's not a "drag" feel or a "laying back on the beat" thing i'm hearing......as i'm hearing it....it's nothing more than a few spots where the drums just ain't "hitting the grid" w the rhythm gtr part. mike hears it, i believe jimmy said he hears it as well.

i think the actual culprit is the rhythm gtr jumping forward and the drums falling behind in spots. you do make some quick adjustments for this as you for the most part do catch up.....around 1:50 or so is a good ex....and then you straighten it out by around 2:00 but then it starts to go south on ya again 2:20.

this might just be a case of hearing (accepting) time discrepancies as our ears recognize them and as our personal tastes are willing to accept stuff that's a little off. (we've talked about this...how you and i are more about living w the 1st take and are willing to accept a minor clam or two as opposed to obsessing over getting it "perfect")

remember.....i was very unhappy w how my gtr part was laying time wise on that "Stacked 4ths" tune that we're working on. it took you a little while to come around to see (hear) what i was fussing over but eventually you got there! :D

yep, for "psychobilly" tune....i don't lay it on your drums "dragging", but instead i'm gonna put it on that rhythm gtr leaping out in front in various spots!

i know you're having some equip issues now that you're dealing w, but if there's a way you can lasso that gtr part and delay it in a few of those spots i bet that might line things up better.

either way....it's a catchy little tune w some nice moves!

For sure - Keith Moon was a "lead drummer" - the band could have used a rhythm drummer to keep a steady beat! Quite the opposite of what Ringo was with the Beatles - and probably on purpose, too.

I usually don't go for name calling and insults, partly because it always degenerate into "you are a dick" and "so are you."

But damn, like anything else there are top level players. You qualify for the Insult Olympics with that one! Remind me not to get on your bad side! 8) I was laughing out loud when I got to "Fat wife..."

I have no idea who this person is, if he is who you long timers say he is. But Jesus. WTF does a guy's wife's weight have to do with anything?
