Jeff, thanks for the link. I would have been 4 years old when Eric Dolphy did this. I confess that jazz is way over my head as a non-educated player, though I do love to sing it. I'm about 24 minutes into this album and it reminds me of the Klezmatics. You ever listen to them?
But I had always heard that Weather Report was the first "jazz fusion" or "acid jazz" band. What, if anything, was their breakthrough contribution if not?
"jeff"??? i'm sure you meant "mark" but since our views on religion and politics so closely mirror one another...we're often confused!!!
's ok...i've been called worse.
i don't think Weather Report was the FIRST fusion band.....rightfully or not that's usually credited to miles w his albums "Jack Johnson" and "Bitches Brew". i think WR was likely the most popular of the 70's fusion groups along w Return To Forever being a close second.
WR big contributions? well, i think they introduced a lot of rock and rollers to "jazz" and maybe got them to go back and check out some of WR's influences or groups that members like Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter played w earlier.....
when people think of the bass playing on WR's body of work they usually think Jaco who made enormous contributions to the instr, but prior to him Miroslav Vituos and later Alphonso Johnson played some wicked stuff on the earlier albums.
then too there are the compositions.....Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, and Jaco wrote a lot of amazing tunes. one more contribution comes to mind.....Zawinul's use of synths in jazz.
i'm sure there are others that i'm not thinking of as well.
