In memoriam of David Bowie’s recent passing, I decided to listen to all of his albums (which by the way took way longer than I thought). Yesterday I finally finished the collection, it took me three weeks!
It was interesting listening to all the songs of an artist who has had so much commercial success. Mainly because most of his songs weren’t commercial at all, I’d say 95%. They were full of twists/turns, length/brevity, and insight/originality. Here was a man who was not afraid to follow his muse—I respect that about him.
Now all of that aside, I decided to list my top three favorite albums and top three favorite tracks from David Bowie’s discography. This ranking is highly subjective and I invite you to offer your opinions on which one’s you think are the top.
Here they are:
Top Albums—
David Bowie (aka Space Oddity)
- This is a cliche choice, I know. However, it really is an amazing album.
Hunky Dory
- Again, not a surprise here. But, the musicality of his early work is quite phenomenal. He has a way to tell stories and some of the most unique ways possible.
Low
- Here is a later album of his. I like it because it inspired a lot of electronic music for the future. The tracks you’ll find here are atmospheric and spacious. There are moments where he utilizes all of the song’s dynamic range in order to get the sound he wants. I recommend listening to it on really nice speakers, to get the full effect.
