FROM THE ARTICLE:
Mixed reality, or hybrid reality, merges real and virtual worlds to produce new environments where physical and digital objects co-exist and interact in real time.

I’m not talking about plugging into the Matrix as a means for improved communication. I’m talking about the ability for two people across the world to put on a headset and share any experience they choose — whether it’s to sit next to each other and physically flip through a photo album or to visit their dream destination.

For anyone who has trouble finding band-members:

(and this is the purpose for bandmix, no?)

If you can imagine...

VR is going to drastically change that situation soon, because you will no longer be limited by geography or distance or transportation. In only a matter of severals months now (by the end of 2017 before its common, but it's theoretically possible already), it will be relatively cheap & easy to jam with several people at a time virtually. Maybe a girl playing violin in China, a percussionist in Puerto Rico, a pianist in Poland, a drummer in Israel, guitarist in Dallas, and a choir doing the backgrounds from the church next door?

And certainly before long, someone smart will write a program in the VR space whereby a musician can join an international "virtual band" jam session, much like they do with most video games today. (are you listening, BM?)

Yes, at a time of your choosing without leaving your jam room at home, you will simply go to a virtual place where there are ACTUAL musicians looking for someone to jam with. Whether anyone approves of this scenario, it is coming nonetheless, and faster than can be imagined.

Imagine....we could have guitar battles between Jimmy and Jeff!! :D It would change the way we relate if we can jam together without getting bloody, don't you think? Always wanted to rock out with a good xylophone.

Personally, I'm excited about being able to record an album with friends from several nations without all the travel and expense it normally would take. We could each go into studios in our respective hometowns, and then using vr technology, record tracks together in real-time on different continents. And it's not going to be an expensive proposition either. Heck, you could broadcast it live to potential millions (with none of them interfering!) and your end-viewer could experience intimately sitting in the recording studio, as if only with the band and engineer. That camera will eventually be a hand-held communications device that replaced your cell phone.

Of course it's always best to perform together live, but this new option will allow for no limits in possibilities for jamming with other people anywhere/everywhere in the world. And with virtual concerts, that band could play for bigger audiences than any current network has ever imagined.

If you can imagine...it's a whole new world.

Other interesting topics from that article:

greater autonomy in where, when and how employees work will serve to maximize productivity by empowering them to complete tasks in the manner that is best for them. It will allow employees to enter and work in “flow” states of complete absorption.

Named by renowned psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, flow refers to “the mental state of operation in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity.”

.......

On a macro level, population is increasing and space is not. Reducing the need for large offices by creating virtual workspaces will make the office park a relic.

(which could make lots of apartment space available!)

If people could live anywhere and work virtually, it seems they would move outside of the city where land is cheaper and life goes by slower.

1. How will they accelerate the stream with no time lag ?
2. To synchronize the delay between the audio and the video from different parts of the world requires equipment with astronomical calculations. Do you have access to the list of equipment being used?
3. Any delays of 25ms or more will drive the drummer and bass player crazy.

My thoughts as well. The current 'jam sites' have enough of a delay that you are playing with a 'virtual' recording.

The technology really is improving exponentially by the day....but I'm not a techie who can explain "how" it will work. It is certainly going to be as fast or faster than a telephone line, since it will be replacing telephones.

There likely will be some latency problems at first. That seems like a simple software solution to me since we can have an international conversation via telephone without noticeable latency now.

But latency when you have 2 or more players (sound going both ways/multiple ways) at least goes 2X that of talking on the phone. If its being relayed first to a local cell antenna, though the system, to another cell antenna. it can be a couple of hundred milliseconds, which is noticeable if you're trying to play along (but not if you are just talking).

OK This was actually a very good thread. I'm reading some very good points from some really smart guys.

Am I seeing the same thing as every one else?

I can't see Jimmy writing those 2 posts. Without reason and about something very interesting from a musical standpoint.

WTF!

Cool post Yod.

RUI Musik wrote:The problem here is that now we have to figure out a way to keep the real world from getting in the way when we’re on our VR adventures. Wireless headsets, yes. Smart contacts and bluetooth earbuds? Do we hire handlers to act like the sober people you’re supposed to have around on acid trips? Invent human-scale hamster balls? Actual leashes?

That is solved by mixed reality, and holograms.

There are already gaming headsets (not released) that will map out the space you are "literally" in and turn it into a "virtual" environment. In other words, you could play a hunting game inside your house, but within the game matrix, the walls of your house can be anything you want...maybe castle walls? A cave wall? The people you're playing with can take on an avatar and look like a giant frog or an angry butterfly if they want.

They are literally standing next to you but appear as something else.

These new VR experiences are so intense that maybe we’ll actually need VR experiences to help us get over the fear of what will happen during VR experiences.

maybe.

I watched excitedly as the person after me strapped in to The Walk headset. He took one look at what was happening inside the goggles, handed them back, and walked away.

Everyone lives with their own fears and preferences. My 19 year old daughter is more afraid of driving.

Was talking with a friend of mine last night about this, who said there is already some recording program that allows people to record together in remote locations real-time (implication being that latency is easily overcome) and VR will allow that process more than a small screen 2D picture.

With the exponential increase of computing power this technology brings, I don't foresee any limitations of latency.
