so Jook, are you indirectly saying Mark is the George Harrison of your "group" and he is not playing within the guidelines you and Bill have set forth for him? you are John Lennon and Bill is Paul McCartney? in a symbolic sense?.. they would never do George's tunes, they would always point out weaknesses in them which was bullshit in my book.. his guitar was in tune I always thought.. would not give him the time of day, what was he credited with 2 or 4 songs all those years! shheeesh.. while my guitar gently weeps is killer

Planetguy wrote:i spent too much time yesterday trying to find the gypsy jazz version that i recorded. DOH!!!! still AWOL.

i didn't formally map it out when laid i down the first track (rhythm gtr on my Mac copy), so when it came to time to overdub upright and mando, i just tried to fly by the seat of my pants and feel it out. easier to do on the mando (playing melody) as the bass line had to (try to) nail it!

FINALLY FOUND IT!

i mixed it down yesterday along w another little throwaway version where i was just setting up getting levels and mic placement together. so it's a little rough timewise in a cpl of spots ....but it least it stayed in 4/4 all the way thru so i really have no excuses for my slop!

bass is a '38 KAY C-1, gtr is a PARIS SWING GG42 Grande Bouche (big mouth), and the mando is an '88 Flatiron A5 Jr.

i also got off my behind yesterday and did some overdubbing on Jook's version of the progression per his invite to do so. he calls his version "Blues For Mexico" ...he's playing the ac gtrs on it.

on his first version that's on my soundcloud page, i overdubbed a bass part on my zebra wood P Bass body w '66 FENDER fretless neck and p/u's.

on the second version of his "BFM" i overdubbed a vibes part. i was too lazy to set up mics so just took a direct line off the vbs using it's pickups.

both bass and vibes were plug 'n' play first takes.

you can find all four versions here: https://soundcloud.com/planetguy-1
could you put it up on the BandMix player? I can't get soundcloud to work today, there are times it works, but not today.. TIA..

the online collaboration format must be a hard row to hoe.. I think this has been attempted before and there was never anything that materialized from it, until you guys put it together, I can't listen to it and make comments, since I still can't get soundcloud to load up, but you guys should be given credit in accomplishing something that was never accomplished before with the online collaboration.. yes, Mark is good, he was playing notes that felt right to him, whether they were the correct notes or not, sometimes musicians tend to overplay.. can't wait to hear it, I wish somebody would comment on it, but they that are remaining silent are probably doing so out of respect for the creators of the "piece" 8)

nope, DSL is 1.7 miles away, they have "hubs" scattered around in rural areas, but not close enough for me.. I will go the straight talk wi-fi hot box thing when I switch out of this windows XP format, have a new Dell computer still in the box with Windows 7 been down under the table for 3 years, ordered it cause I was having Blue screen of death errors, but a day or two beforethe new puter arrived I found out the real reason for the errors and remedied it, and still using the old one.. the new one is 64 bit this one is 32 bit, and I hate taking a chance, the printer won't work unless I get the right drivers, much of my software at hunfdreds of dollars will then be obsolete and worthless then..etc. basically waiting for the power supply to burn out on this one, or AVG quits supporting XP, whichever comes first.

when I do swap out the puters, I will try the straight talk wi-fi hotbox, they at wallyworld, where it's sold, have convinced me if you don't drop calls on your wireless cell phone, and reception is good, then I am close enough to a tower for the wi-fi hotspot to work well..notice quite a few bad reviews about the technolofy, and it is NOT un-limited data usage either, won't be here at the board much eating up data when I get off unlimited dial-up.. can run thru a lot of data fast unless you shut the flash player off showing all the commercials LOL

Personally, I would have taken a different approach. Don't get me wrong, I think you're one helluva good player and you played very well over the tune. But this is what collaboration is all about. You put two different ideas/styles/interpretations/mindsets/approaches whatever............together and you see what happens.

first off....i've taken no umbrage, offense, nor do i regard any of the above as "criticism".

Just to give you an idea of how I compose or 'think' or map out or whatever.(Just so you can better understand me and the way I think, for whatever purpose that may serve.............). I never played the root on the bottom of the arpeggios. I think I would have played a more minimal bass part concentrating on establishing these roots of the progression. Then I would have left space for the mallet parts to play off the 5ths (which are missing from the arpeggios themselves). This would have balanced out all the chords harmonically but in free form. This is tricky as you know because there aren't any time constraints and it has to feel free, not rushed.

as i see it, sometimes it makes sense for the bass to function as an instrument holding things together... sometimes it free lances....and it's determined by what else is going on in the tune. on your tune....w the free, rubato feel and lack of a constant pulse it's almost impossible (for me anyway) to guess where your next downbeat is going to land....esp so when you change from one "section" to the next. those are the places where a more 'traditonal' bass approach would be tying and "unifying" things.

so in trying to add what i thought worthwhile....what i didn't hear was many hooks or melodic phrases present in what you gave me to work with. that, to me is what was missing from your free take on it. and since it clearly was/is a very free approach you chose to take...trying to straighten it out w a more traditional roots and fifths approach seemed rude, and to contradict the cool and very NON traditional approach you went with! :D

here's one of my takes on the chord progression where there's plenty of "melodic info" from the steel drums and gtr so to me... that's where the more traditionally rhythmic role w lots of roots and fifths makes sense and is called for.

I don't have a bass w/ me but I think you probably did what I was referring to on the bass and may have incorporated the 5ths there (most bassists do) and played those notes on the bass instead of the vibes.

well, since both the vibes and bass versions have melodic phrases.... they both use roots, fifths (perfect and flatted), thirds, ninths, etc.

i'm listening to the bass version as i'm typing and lo and behold, though it IS a very melodic approach i took...i'm also hearing hearing plenty of places where i do come to rest on the root of the chords! plus, many of the phrases do land (and sometimes start)on the root or fifth.

Just my slant, FWIW. Again, this is not criticism. It's just a description of how I work. I think the next # will work better because it is straight up and not as conceptual. Conceptual pieces can get strange and really tie you down if you let them. They are fun but sometimes it's best to switch gears.

well, i had fun messing w it and i'm glad you enjoyed what i did. it's interesting to see where people take things on their own when left to their own devices and sensibilities.....but i have no problem w being given some direction either and when someone has a clear cut vision or ideas of what they'd like to hear.....it takes the guess work out of things.

i'm looking fwd to the next collab. :D

I wish i knew how the 7 layers of the internet worked so I know if problems are on my end or server side..sorry for the ramble, but really frustrated the last several days,.. :D  is it me or is it them!
