While working on two books and a short story I got an offer to contribute to an anthology. High testosterone military stuff but why not. No zombies though, damn...

Have some endoscopic surgery Friday (fix some breathing problems) and a gig (Christmas show) Saturday.

Surgical stuff is a bit intimidating but net result should be that I am healthy enough to start putting a musical project back together.

Plus - if you have never played an upbeat version of "Angels we have heard on high, " you're missing out - more fun than I had imagined - particularly with good players.

So that's what I'm up to.

I hope you all have projects that are both fun and lucrative!

Talbot

ps - For you old guys - while rehearsing yesterday our two chick singers did a really incredible bit of harmony. I called them "The Everly Sisters." Blank stare. Sigh...

thanks Mike for being an inspiration.. tell me more about Atlanta Underground if you get a chance, no biggie though, but is there an area for buskers?.. maybe New York City or Boston or Phillie are not the right choices.. Atlanta might be the right fit to busk?.. my place is paid off in two months been paying on it since August 1992, really starting to get the travelling bug again, like when I was in my 20's/.. been through Atlanta several times, big as can be.. always loved it north of there between Chattanooga and Atlanta, anywhere in there might be a good place to re-locate if live music is lively.. just ranting I guess, but Springfield holds absolutely no promise at all, you should see what it's like, and you will agree it's dead, just like bob saying no gigs in Kansas City, it's worse in Springfield..

Praying for your health, Talbot. You'll need that to do this project!

Dayne, long before trying to make it in NY, LA or Nashville, (all too expensive) I'd recommend:

Asheville, NC
Toronto
Austin, TX
San Francisco
New Orleans, LA

(in that order)

Not only are these good places to find like-minded musicians and gigs, but life is good there in other respects also.
Atlanta is mostly a hotbed for hip-hop. These days it doesn't matter so much where you live because you're going to have to travel anyway, once you've got the band together, if you want to make any money at it.

thanks Ted for the reply, I love those towns I have been to every one of them except Austin, visited my twin brother in 1981 drove over from Ft. Walton Bch, to Texas City, I wished I had went on into the Texas interior to visit Austin, although in 1981 I don't think it had established itself as a music center so much, although it had started, the liberal stronghold as Austin is, must attract artists in general?..

San Francisco is pricey, and getting pricier, but if there was one city I would like to live that would be San Francisco, excellent climate, people don't have air conditioners there, don't need them, was there in 1968 and 1973 briefly

Asheville is really nice, but have only drove through on the interstate, it's as if a bunch of hippies settled there with liberal views, but now have succumbed to conservatism.. up in the mountains and would have to check out the music scene cause I never have visited, only passed thru

New Orleans a bunch of us drove over in Doug's van topm see the Rolling Stones at the Superdome.. walking to the concert from downtown parking center I had seen something I had never seen before, a street preacher preaching to a small flock on a corner maybe 2 or 3 dozen people absorbing it all in..lived in Des Moines for several years and never once saw a genuine street preacher with a megaphone, it was cool!

Toronto, legal constraints I would think getting a visa? maybe jimmy will tell me you can cross cause it's open borders?

I have heard that Ashville's busking scene is quite busy, but with the usual share of wannabes who can't play but make a spectacle of themselves and that there are propsoed (?) laws gong into effect on busking.
Toronto gets frigging cold in the winter - not sure about the subway busking there but busking in Canada, in general, is very vibrant - when I've visited Ottawa there are many on the streets and plazas in the warm weather.
Austin's music scene is incredibly hot, of course, and as competitive as Nashville these days.
