I didn't know much then but my impression was that is was like a Gibson ES335 sort of base. Cherry Sunburst. Had that 'old' solid look to it.
When I'm on the way to play with someone I punch up "Bless it's pointed little head" for "Another Side of this Life" and "Plastic Fantastic Lover." Gets me in the mood.

The bass you are referring to is the Gibson EB-2. I drooled over one when I was a kid. The guy in the music store even let me play it! I almost pissed in my pants.
Here is my favorite Jack song. These guys inspired me more than anyone else back in the 70's. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eizk0MSJLU The studio version blows this away if you haven't heard it (Burgers, 1972). The small fuzz amp is panned hard to one size and the clean punchy signal is on the other channel. Jorma plays acoustic guitar so Jack is more in front of the mix and Papa John isn't even playing on it. I heard this playing over the sound system @ a grocery store a few years ago. I just stood in the aisle and listened to the whole song. How cool can that be?
nice to see other fans of Jack here! i was pretty sure whenyou mentioned "Burgers" that the link might very well be for "Water Song". that might be my favorite Hot Tuna album. great bass playing throughout. i love the bass work on "Sea Child" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65uA4JjZA0U and "Highway Song" too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFOWi3J69Ew
i agree, JC made the Airplane something really special and different from everyone else at the time. his playing was always a great example of how to play for the song while still playing w lots of personality. and credit where credit is due....the man's got the best eyebrow in the biz!
being a big fan of Starfire basses.... i've tried the Gibson EB2, Epiphone Rivoli, and the Fender Coronado. IMO....they all look cool but don't come anywhere close in terms of build quality, playability, and tone.
there's a reason why you saw a lot of bassplayers in the 60's early '70's toting SF's as opposed to those others.
