Bob - no, you're doing it right! Time is too short (specially when you get to our age group!) to waste any more of it. If you don't get answers to your questions, then you know that they were not the right fit.

A couple of years ago I was contacted (through BM) to join a trio, and I didn't ask the right questions to start (which for me are different than your questions). Wasted several months of time to find out the trio's "leader" didn't know how to get a paying gig, and really didn't care if he got one - he was happy to play for free so that he could play his originals in front of people.

what do you mean by being a waste of time and money? as long as it fulfilled your dream of getting your tunes on a CD or cdbaby for download, then I see it was not wasted time or money, as long as it made you happy and content, then it did the job..

I think you are exactly on the money. I'd be really impressed if I hit up a band for a gig and they asked me those questions. Time is money - ultimately you have to find that stuff out regardless but it can be painful when it drags out.

Around here the typical mentality is 'I just want to play those songs that get people out on the dance floor'. Yet they want to do the same old 'classic rock' and/or 'deep cut' songs. Great - who is your audience? 50-60 year-olds aren't dancing too much these days. Where do you plan on playing? What kind of money do you expect to make? None of these people have even considered these questions.
