dolphy was also great on alto. a lot of people miss out on how well he could play "inside"....besides the great stuff he did w Mingus, i love his playing on the classic Oliver Nelson album "Blues And The Abstract Truth"...then again EVERYONE plays great on that album.!Definitely an album that should be in every jazz collection. anyone that ain't hip to it, i put it in the top 10 jazz must have albums.


Bennie Maupin played some killer bass clarinet w herbie hancock's electric band of the 70's and w pretty much the same cats minus herbie when they went as The Headhunters.

marcus miller, in addition to being a badass bassplayer, composer, and arranger... is also a pretty competent multi-instrumentalist who does a very respectable job on bass clarinet.

some strange synchronicity is occuring, I was reading about Marcus Miller earlier today before your post, it seems Miles Davis stole him from late 70's Lee Ritenour lineup when Ritenour had his "Rio" album come out, he was unknown then.. played thumb bass

Ted, this is avant-garde music.. I believe some avant-garde afficiandos here have said, some avant garde artists had their gear destroyed at gigs and threatened with bodily harm, and were even outkasts among the Los Angeles session players of the day, because their music was off the wall and did not conform to musical standards..
