no Jookeyman, those two players don't ring a bell.. maybe they are buried in my unconscious ..I have been trying to wean myself off of smooth jazz, but I am having to force myself.. my jazz people I think of from the past are Eric Gale, The Crusaders, Spyro Gyra, Fourplay, Pat Martino, Herb Ellis, Lenny Breau, Barney Kessel, stuff like that.. but I am not a real jazz player, at my late stage in life, I am making an attempt at copping a feel for it, but it's tough to do.. so much easier to do the 1-4-5 blues rock/ country things

jook if you would, could you give me a link to a few "Free-Form" jazz artists so I see where the difference is in my opinion of what "free-form jazz" is..TIA..

Jookyman's right about Coleman, if you want to get into "free jazz" that's the guy to check out.
And, Cecil Taylor, Albeft Ayler, 70s Sun Ra, 1965 - 67 John Coltrane,
were all different takes on the "free thing", and there are many more.

Yes, just to verify what I posted-

Fred Frith and Marc Ribot play avant-garde guitar (but they can play "straight').
So does Henry Kaiser of CBA.

James Blood Ulmer & Sonny Sharrock both went on to play in funky ensembles, but they played free on top of the funk. I would rather put them in a funk/jazz genre but that's just my take. They both did some avant-garde stuff at various parts of their carriers esp. Ulmer's early stuff and Sharrock's Space Ghost recordings.

There is also a difference between 'avant-garde' jazz and 'free' jazz.
Avant-garde jazz can be structured w/ a set tempo (most being odd/even).
Free jazz is................free of these constraints but it still can have a 'feel'.
The lines can get a little blurry.

there must be at a minimum, 30 sub-genres of jazz, so I believe you when you say it can get a little blurry.. in my best Gump voice, you gotz acid jazz, smooth jazz, modal jazz, avant-garde jazz, smooth jazz, bebop, jazz-fusion, etc.

checked your trk, dayne. not bad, but i found the intonation/tuning of the gtrs a little off-putting.

a lot of people will hear something "progressive" or "outside" played and be quick to call it avante grade, or free jazz.

while those genres do have "outside" playing.....it's also quite common for someone to play "outside" on music that's straight ahead.
