here's some video of the "new" Guild X-150. not the usual top notch video chops from the mrs. as she was too far from the stage.

the gtr is a little low in the video's mix....unusual, as i'm almost always the loudest damn thing on all of our gig recordings!

when i get the audio i recorded on my TASCAM DR-05 offloaded i'll put up a tune or two where the gtr is a little better represented.

Has anyone ever fallen into that pool (audience, not players!) when you are playing?

Thanks for those very generous comments, Bill!

Where did you have the tone set on the guitar (and the amp)?
I think the tone is GREAT. That's a nice PU. It doesn't sound too bright too me.
It isn't that 'old school' round tone but it cuts through w/o being too bright.
But I was listening through a cheap set of headphones @ work w/ little bass response.
Put up some samples and don't mess w/ the EQ.

"Wes"???? HAH! i've huge respect for him, but if there's anyone i might try to emulate.... it'd be Kenny Burrell and Jim Hall! (not that i'd ever come close)

thanks for the tone compliment. I had the gtr's tone control about halfway backed off. the amp's volume at three and the trbl/mids/bass all around five (11:00 )

Spinal Tap's amps went to 11 but the Deville's go to TWELVE!!

i always knew it was a great sounding (if heavy) amp for gtr but this was the 1st time i played vibes thru it.....very nice.

re: the absence of "old school tone"....you're quite correct. but i've got gtrs that do that bit, so it's nice having something that's got some different tricks up it's "F" holes. this gtr could cop the Grant Green tone w no sweat.

i'll try to get some tunes from the DR-05 posted later today. ( be careful what you wish for!)

Nice. Is the amp just not connecting with phone camera because it's behind the XYLOPHONE?

thanks for checking out the tunes, JM!

well, i think it depends on the venue, sensitivity of band members, and genre. for straight ahead jazz and hard bop that bright Grant Green in your face tone does work but i think it's still the exception to the rule. i like my jazz gtr tone like i like my wimmenz......warm, and round!

here's another video w the same band at same venue but w my warmer EASTMAN 803CE15 (which can still get pretty bright when needed. i'm playing thru my '65 Deluxe RI.

Another idea. Change the capacitor on the tone pot. Check out the value on the cap and go up until you get the tone you're looking for.

i'm kinda loathe about asking anyone to make adjustments in their tone. volume is another story, but tone is such a personal thing.

i'm gonna live w the gtr as is for awhile before making any changes (like a full across one piece wooden bridge) . i do like the non redundant no redundancy of having a guitar that's different than my other axes.

gonna put some 12-54 strings on it manana and see what that's like...i'm expecting big things and looking forward to increase in it's already ample acoustic volume.

Yeah, I understand. I was a little hesitant when I posted that because it is a personal thing unless you were hiring sidemen and weren't an established band.
But the cap idea works and it's a very cheap fix if you can do it yourself.

funny you mention changing the cap....cos i'm getting ready to place an order and will likely be picking up a few caps of different ratings. i've been toying w the idea of adding a tone control to my PEERLESS Monarch which presently only has a pickguard mounted vol.

a pretty easy job on that gtr w p/g mounted controls, but changing the cap out on the X150,....well, going on fishing expeditions on hollow body "f" hole(d) gtrs is a royal pain in the arse! so i don't think i'm gonna sign on for that aggravation w the Guild!
