President Barack Obama has been very clear about his unwillingness to enforce U.S. immigration laws, in striking difference to how Donald Trump plans to improve them, should he become president. However, this latest action may have Obama changing his tune ever so slightly.
Reports have surfaced detailing that immigration official and top attorney for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Arizona, Patricia M. Vroom, has been paid $400,000 dollars by the Obama administration to drop her lawsuit against it.
The lawsuit claimed that she had been “bullied and harassed” by officials in Washington — behavior that she says began after she raised concerns about the application of Obama’s prosecutorial discretion in the case of illegal immigrants.
Vroom also said the administration had lowered her “annual performance rating” due to her caution about releasing illegal aliens with criminal backgrounds.
Vroom had sued the administration on the grounds of age and sex discrimination, and in an effort to shut her up further, the administration has agreed to pay her $400,000 in taxpayer funds to end her lawsuit (H/T The Federalist Papers Project).
The White House also agreed to reinstate her annual performance rating to “achieved excellence” as part of the bribe.
Now, Vroom will retire on October 1 after serving 30 years with the federal government. Despite the sizable settlement, the administration still claims it did nothing wrong.
While administration officials may very well believe that, if they did not do anything wrong, why would they pay her close to a half a million dollars to stop talking?
