Management has realized these 'special edition' guitars seldom sell well. There are already about 20 different LP models currently being produced - and the general opinion of the 2015 models is that they are lousy - nowhere near the quality of previous years. They're offering two different versions of the self-tuning system now, in hopes of grabbing the young beginners who have no 'ear' to tune with the normal methods.
I've always loved the sound of Gibson Songwriter and Hummingbird/Dove acoustic models - but I played a J35 (which retails at $1800, same as myTaylor) at Guitar Center a couple of weeks ago and was not impressed with the sound of it at all.

Last year Gibson paid the government heroes back for SWATting them. They released the "Government Model" Gibson guitar.

I guess self playing guitars is next

Just got to play a baritone guitar for the first time at one friend's house, then stopped by another buddy's house on the way home and played his new Variax. It did all kinds of guitar emulators and tunings. Both sounded great, both very fun, in very different ways. Still, I'm glad I learned to tune decades before robots (tried to) take over.

Half the people I meet who have learned to play guitar in the last 10 years can't tune a guitar without a tuner - and they can't tell when a guitar is out of tune without one, either. Remember the 'old days' when you'd be on stage and shout out 'give me an "A"'?
The self-tuning systems are good if you change your tunings a lot (but who really does that with electrics?) Want to do a double-drop D? Just hold the 2 E strings on the 2nd fret, press the button, its instant.
The Variax system is different in that it doesn't retune the strings, it just changes the notes electronically.

All of my experience with using plug-ins for guitar tone have been a disappointing failure up to this point. With the Variax and a rack unit, we finally had some mean tone. He doesn't use headphones in his studio, so you could hear the note from the guitar and the changed note from the monitors making a chord. Very strange.
