Hitler was jailed for the Beer Hall Putsch in Munich. The time he spent in jail writing "My Plan" (Mein Kampf) is where he also figured out that taking over Germany would be easier if he did it through the law, and completely "legal".
He studied FDR's socialist-work-programs in the USA and that became the pattern by which the Nazis were able to disguise their agenda as "for the common man". By making the government in Germany the largest employer of citizens, he was able to hijack an entire nation and put it under dictatorial control. By slogans, ridicule, and propaganda, the Nazis (National Socialist Party) angered the electorate into thinking that anyone with a political disagreement was their mortal enemy. It was only one step further to turn them all into perpetrators of the Nazi plan.
Every German I know (and I know thousands because I go there once or twice yearly since 2006 and have played in 9 states there) will tell you that they can see this happening in America right now.
By the way, Hitler studied Andrew Jackson's treatment of native Americans for his final solution.
