stop the bickering and start discussing all of this in a civilized fashion, look up the FACTS and ignore the media hype, ignore the propaganda, and let's try putting our heads together in the interest of some sort of solution.

While our left-leaning friends have been civil in this discussion, they don't seem willing to look at hard facts and add them up.

I understand the argument that there should be reasonable restrictions, I really do. Most conservatives would agree...however....we don't trust politicians to stop there, and we have seen how one Administration can "re-interpret" the purpose of laws from a previous Administration (like the Patriot Act)

I choose to err on the side of freedoms guaranteed in the Constitution. There will always be crime...but we won't be able to turn back a totalitarian government (now or in the future) if we lose the right to protect ourselves.

Read the WHOLE sentence....

People who have shown themselves to be "Mature, law-abiding citizens" being the key words. In that case ABSOLUTELY!!!! There already are many who do own that kind of firepower....when was the last time you heard about them using it to commit a crime?

If I could afford an F-16, there wouldn't be an ISIS problem.

I've noticed that quite often especially reading the comments sections below many news articles. Granted a few conservatives do too, usually very few. But that seems to be the primary tactic of those of a liberal view. Attack, insult and ridicule. Very rarely do I see them even try to take a long, hard look at the facts and present a well thought out civil response. Especially if the facts don't support their viewpoint.

I agree some reasonable restrictions are definitely needed. Keeping firearms out of the hands of people with demonstrable mental or psychological issues and criminals especially. As we've seen for years, keeping them out of the hands of criminals is extremely difficult, the black market is booming. That will continue. Dealing with mental issues might be even harder, in a lot of cases there are very few red flags until a person goes over the edge. In many cases the signs are there, but ignored or the people who see them are not aware of what they are seeing.

In a couple of the mass "spree shootings", like Columbine or Sandy Hook, maybe they could have been prevented if someone had just known what to look for. In some cases I think the signs were just ignored, or nothing was done even though it was obvious the person had problems. but it brings up moral issues as well, do you determine a person unfit just because of a little odd behavior? When does a person cross the line between just an ordinary oddball to an outright threat to society?

Convicted criminals are a different story. Convicted felons already can never own a firearm legally. That rarely stops them, most figure what's one more charge? So what...Background checks don't stop that, they almost never go to a retail outlet to get guns anyway. Find the right neighborhood in any big city and you can get anything you want without the paperwork. Or the right gang member...

One thing that's rarely even mentioned, the court system has been backing off on sentencing for years. Prison is not really much of a punishment any more. 24 hour cable TV, heating and AC, free medical, free legal aid, get a college education free, don't have to work if you don't want to...there was a time prison was a punishment, people didn't want to go back. I have a neighbor who got into trouble a while back and was looking at 2 years. His reaction? "I can do 2 years standing on my head." And yes that's a direct quote. So most couldn't care less about a year tacked onto their sentence for possession of a firearm. Some even decide to take death row, figuring they'll live longer. Ted Bundy lived on death row for about 15 years while he ran through all the endless appeals...after killing at least 30 women...this guy just convicted in the Boston Marathon bombing will be the same if he gets a death sentence. He'll still be sitting there going through more appeals on your tax dollars 15 years from now.

It's ludicrous. Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon should be mandatory life, period. Some states are now carrying what is called a repeat offender statute. I know Louisiana does and I think Texas too. This is a step in the right direction. get convicted 3 or 4 times and next time it's 25 to life as a repeat offender, obviously prison hasn't taught you anything. The DA here wanted to use the repeat offender statute on the neighbor I mentioned earlier, his lawyer got a better deal. So now he's back and I have to keep everything locked at all times. Senseless...

So yes, some sensible restrictions are a good thing. But for the average person who has never gotten anything more serious than a speeding ticket, I would be all for background checks as long as NO information is retained. That database is nothing more than a list pf people to confiscate guns from.

Gun control was one of Hitler's first moves.

"The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to allow the subject races to possess arms. History shows that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by so doing. Indeed, I would go so far as to say that the supply of arms to the underdogs is a sine qua non for the overthrow of any sovereignty. So let's not have any native militia or native police. German troops alone will bear the sole responsibility for the maintenance of law and order throughout the occupied Russian territories, and a system of military strong-points must be evolved to cover the entire occupied country." --Adolf Hitler, dinner talk on April 11, 1942

This a good story, but I also have another one from this week where a passer by saw a man with a gun in a barber shop firing at customers, men and children. The guy passing by had a carry permit and he grabbed his conceal, ran into the barber shop, and he shot & killed the would be killer. He saved those people. That is what "good guys" with guns do. They stop the bad guys whenever their paths cross.

But this article is also good.

Concealed Permit Holder Stops Attempted Mass Shooting in Chicago

http://www.breitbart.com/big-government ... n-chicago/

by AWR Hawkins20 Apr 20150

On Friday, an Uber driver with a concealed carry permit thwarted an attempted mass shooting by pulling his own weapon and shooting a gunman who had opened fire in Chicago’s Logan Square.

Illinois Assistant State’s Attorney Barry Quinn verified that the driver “had a concealed-carry permit and acted in the defense of himself and others.”

According to the Chicago Tribune, the driver was watching “a group of people” walk in front of his car on North Milwaukee Avenue just before midnight when 22-year-old Everardo Custodio allegedly “began firing into the crowd.” The Uber driver pulled his own gun and “fired six shots at Custodio,” wounding him in “the shin, thigh, and lower back.”

The attempted mass shooting ended with no one other Custodio injured.

The Chicago Sun Times reported that the Uber driver had dropped off a passenger minutes before Custodio allegedly began shooting. The Times contacted Uber about the incident and they simply said “the company requires all its drivers to abide by local, state and federal laws pertaining to transporting firearms in vehicles.”

Breitbart News previously reported on a March 22 incident in which a concealed carry permit holder entered a Philadelphia barbershop to stop an attempted mass shooting in progress.

In that inciden,t a 40-year-old man began randomly firing at patrons inside the barbershop and was stopped when the concealed carry permit holder heard gunfire, ran into the shop, and shot the would-be mass shooter in the chest, killing him. No one else was harmed.

Concealed Carry Permit Holder Stops Gunman During Attempted Mass Shooting

by AWR Hawkins30 Mar 20150
On March 22 a man who opened fire on children and adults in a Philadelphia barbershop was shot and killed by a citizen with a concealed carry permit.

The armed citizen had been walking by the barbershop when he heard gunshots. He ran inside and shot the gunman.

According NBC Philadelphia, the incident arose after two men got into a fight in the barbershop. An unnamed 40-year-old man fought with another customer then pulled out a gun and started shooting.

Police said the man fired on “customers and barbers,” and some of those customers were children. As the 40-year-old man was firing, the citizen with a concealed permit entered the barbershop and shot the gunman in the chest.

The 40-year-old was transported to Presbyterian Hospital where he died from his wounds.

No one else was injured thanks to the armed citizen’s intervention. Philadelphia Police Captain Frank Llewellyn said, “He responded and I guess he saved a lot of people in there.”

I read a post on FB yesterday from a soldier in Afhghanistan - he noted that in his op area there were ten thousand or so civilians - every one of whom seemed to carry a fully automatic AK. That was not counting the 'insurgents.' He was pissed because he can't own one.

I feel the same way.

before we 'liberated' Iraq all those poor unfree people were able to own automatic weapons, buy liquor and worship any way they chose. Bush and Obama fixed that. Mission accomplished eh?

If we are worried about 'gun violence' it's pretty simple really - we know who does all the violence in the cities - the cops are afraid of them and the politicians pander to them.

The mass shooting have been 100% white guys on psychotropic drugs. Hmmmm. Wonder what the problem with guns is? Couldn't be related to the drugs could it?

I have to give him credit, he did point out one thing I forgot, criminals get guns on the black market AND by stealing them...but not exclusively by either method. I missed that...

Mass shootings have been all white guys as far as I know, that part I won't argue with but all on psychotropic drugs? Before I believe that one I want some references. I do know a couple were for sure, or at least on antidepressants, but not sure I'll believe all of them without some verification. Got some legitimate references?

Oh yeah, I think a couple had quit their meds too...

It is not all white guys. Ya'll seem to forget the two black guys one young and an older guy that modified their car by taking the back seat out and cutting a hole where they went around sniping folks with assault rifles. They terrified a large city, i don't remember which one but they shot and killed a lot of people. Heck I think it was Detroit. Since we are making this a racial issue. :D

Mr Haley those guys weren't so much mass murderers as they were Islamic terrorists. Remember that moron police chief who was sure it was right wing 'gun nuts?' How many died because that idiot was looking for Klansman in a white pickup! Chief Moose - who combined the worst attributes of affirmative action with a flawed education - exacerbated by personal stupidity.

I should note regarding bazookas - original colonials in time of the declaration and constitution often owned cannons. We've watered down our educational system so much I hate to see some of these modern clowns with squirt guns. It makes me sad.

I don't want my rights impinged just because of the mass of assholes out there. Everyone talks about background checks. I don't care...about criminal background - nobody's perfect. I just care if they are assholes - if so - sorry...no bazookas for you tough guy!

The real question is should people that are verified as non-assholic be allowed to order grenades on line.. I have mixed feelings about that.
