I'm not a website guru or anything remotely close, but it seems obvious that the ads on bandmix are tailored to me specifically. They seem to know what I like and maybe even who I know.

For example, I'm always getting an ad for a movie called "The Identical" at Bandmix. I know the film-maker and many of the people involved but I've never mentioned that...so how do they know? Is it the power of google? Who is mining my data and sending it to bandmix?

Just for the fun of it....what ad do you see at the top of this page? (right now I'm seeing an ad for Hilton Hotels, where I stay quite a bit)

What ad do you see most on bandmix?

Well I was hoping for Asian brides but all I got is an ad for Ginger Baker's first album in 16 years. :D Welcome to keyword advertising that puts "relevant ads" in front of your eyes.

NoScript can be pretty intrusive but does offer some relief:

Many websites use cookies to find out where you've been surfing and display ads related to either sites you have recently been browsing or Google searches you have recently run. I see it on several sites I use on a regular basis, the ads change fairly often, right now it's a Google ad, just a few minutes ago it was music equipment, not long ago I noticed electronics (I had been looking for parts for a couple of electronics projects) then it'll be guitar parts, then whatever I was looking at last time I opened Firefox. Searched for info on a specific guitar someone else was having a problem with, next thing I know I'm seeing ads selling that guitar...ditto for amps and stomp boxes, astronomical telescopes, cameras, you name it. Whatever I've been looking at or for recently several sites I normally use advertise it. It's not just this site...pay attention and a lot of the sites you visit do the same thing. Go do some googling for something you've never even thought of and it will pop up in ads very soon. Visit a few of the sites in the results and it's guaranteed.

Basically the website you're looking at reads the cookies on your machine and it displays ads related to whatever you have been browsing or running searches for. It's called targeted advertising. Different from spam, which is just throw everything at you they can think of and hope one will get you to bite.

I try to keep political stuff on Facebook to a minimum. I don't share anything political, don't post "hey, make sure you go vote" type stuff. I don't actually want 95% of my fb friends to even remember to vote.
When I did start to like a few political things, though, the floodgates open. Suggestions of things you might/ should like: there's Conservative Talker Mark Levin, next to Barack Obama. Does anyone on the planetactually like both of those people?
