Planet Jazz gig tonight at a new (for us) Country Club in Columbia MO. our regular drummer is gigging w his other band. so, an old drummer buddy i used to play with (in jazz/R&B bands, and country bands) is making the drive from St. Louis (about 90 min) to fill in.

Bruce is a great guy, stoopid funny, and on my list of top three drummers i've had the privilege to work with. i haven't seen him or played with him in close to twenty years! this guy's pocket is HUUUUUGE.

i can't wait, and i'm only bummed that i'm not getting to bass tonight!

Boys I know how this is. There is a cat named Chris Sherlock who was and is my maximum drummer. We played together like we were one - no matter what either one of us did - the other actually anticipated it.

I hope to play with him again before I shuffle off this mortal coil. Musicians are lucky. Where ever we go - we have brothers. People who have heard our story before, and probably lived it.

I like to play with the survivors.

I jam with a drummer like that and have played gigs with him since I met him 40 years ago. Even if he has never heard a song that I wrote or decided to play, he knows where I am going every time and he is right there with the tastiest of licks. It is really nice to find those musicians along the way. :)

the gig was an absoulte blast. everyone got on splendidly (as expected) on and off the stage. just great chemistry and it was great going down some different streets and chasing new adventures.

the members were very appreciative and vocal. staff was super cool, easy on the eyes, real helpful (we were never w/o a full glass) and maybe the best part was the killer BBQ they served us! looks like this going to turn into a regular once a month deal.

got a pretty good recording w my Tascam DR-05 that i'm listening to now. man that lil' machine has got to be the best $75 i EVER spent!

yeah, they're good paying gigs and since you're getting heard by some folks w money, they present good ops for other gigs.....someone's daughter is getting married, someone's having a pool party, house concerts, christmas parties, etc.

yeah, it really is a joy to play with musicians like that. and it's an area that clearly separates the men from the boys...being able to hang (and more) when playing a tune that's new to you. one you've heard before but never played...or maybe one you've never even heard before.

and interesting to, seeing how different musicians approach that.... everything from sitting back "going to school", letting things unfold, and being cool as things become apparent... to the other extreme where someone decides to "own it" and goes for it.

damn geography. i used to get out to The Plaza in KC for their music series w a Caribbean/Calypso band i used to play in, and some P-JAZZ gigs. those were fun and good paying gigs.

gimme a shout if you're ever in the mid mo area.
