whats the story amigos...ive added a new demo song to my profile..its called "before colour tv"....i refuse to accept that you cant record without spending money..this one proves that you can record stuff using any half-good pc and just hit record and see what happens.....
its recorded for zero money down..we used audacity and one mic....
im trying to get away from my old over produced big sounding stuff and stripping it back a little......

on the other hand it cost me a day drinking guinness but there you have it...ive seven more demo songs recorded from the same session and ill post them in time..

and by the by there demos...one take everything...the vocals and everything else are just guides and many have already changed since ive jammed them with the full band...im not looking for reviews of the sound etc just the arangement and song...

dont be shy now...

oh yes and we play as a two piece called ...."ahicknamick"
we also play together in the full band that still has no name.

Sounds very good for a no-frills computer recording.

Only problem....


It is a little too similar to James Blunt's "You're Beautiful". There are elements of the verse melody especially that are very similar as well as the chord progression being close as well.

You need to change something. Either a slightly different chord structure or change the melody on the verses a little.

I'd hate for a good song to end up mostly reminding people of another song, a song which is starting to get annoying to some people, since it was overplayed to death.

Good job though.

cheers sanshouheil and well spotted craig...your spot on...its the good old C,G,Am,F its been used in lots of songs i like...like beautiful and amy by damien rice..
but i play it with the capo on the 4th and that is in the very same key as beautiful and it does have the air of beautiful...i tried playing with the chords and the key but it just didnt work with the vocal melody i had in mind....so i just said "f uck it" it is what it is.....some of it sounds like beautiful and some of it dont...i just like this song and its also a very nice key to sing in for me... it sounds alot heavier with the bass,drums and keys of the full band playing behind it...but well spotted craig.

Ok. I was going to mention that a full band arrangement could make this a non-issue, but I thought it was staying just a duo piece.

Hey, in Western music, we only get 12 notes to work with, not including octave equivalents. So we are bound to run over what's been done before. I do it all the time. Write something "original" that kicks ass, only to sit there and go... DAMN IT... I just wrote Clapton's Tears in Heaven (or whatever) LOL

So, I go through it all the time, deciding whether it is distinct enough to keep, or can be altered slightly, or has to be scrapped altogether, cause it is just too much the same song.

Usually the arrangement helps alot.

I really like this song. It kind of stuck in my head. I love the way you pronounce "touch". I like the lyrics cause I can relate to it. I remember our first color tv. Cant wait to hear the "studio" version, although I dont know if you can improve on the raw quaility of this recording or not.

What mic and preamp are you using?

I.A. This is a beautiful song, very. I think you did a good job, and it does have that James Blunt feel.

However, I think it sounds, guitar wise, more like The Wallflowers song "6th Avenue Heartache" done in an arpeggiated version.

Nice job man, I love the vocals.

EDIT: No, wait! I realized what song I was thinking of! It is not "6th Avenue Heartache" (Even though it is similar in feel), it is Pearl Jam's "Yellow Ledbetter." It reminds me of that immensely. Especially the acoustic version seen here on Youtube:

craig i totaly understand where your at with writing something cool and then finding out its something else....ive been there myself and its hard to make things sound new when just about every chord progression has already been done...but we march on..

jw123 we didnt use a preamp and the mic was a cheap shure sm78 "copy" i bought for 50bucks i dont know who makes it...its not the best mic in the world but you dont need one to demo stuff...just plug the mic into the pc and start recording...audacity has a mini preamp buit in to the program...its about the best free recording software out there.

rhythmman yes its true i dont know how anyone who calls him or herself a musician hasnt got audio on the profile...its just so easy these days to record that there are very few excuses for not having any audio...you dont have to be a wizard to get rough songs like "before colour tv" recorded.

and g.a cheers for the comments im glad you like it...i was a bit unsure to post these demos as there not finished songs but it shows how a song starts and mutates from the original idea into a full on finished piece..
ill post full band recordings of the same demos when there done...a little before and after type of affair..

Simply stated, I like it. I'm particularly impressed with the way the guitar sounds through my little computer speakers. Very full and rich. I have tons of vinyl, boxes of cassettes and stacks of Cd's recorded with songs that don't have the sound quality of your demo. I do have one question however, what would posses a fine upstanding Guinness drinkin' Irish fellow, such as yourself, to misspell "color" the same way as those "lime suckin" rascals that burned down the White House?

cheers howlinj im glad you like it....its funny the sound of the guitar is so good it just goes to show that you can record good stuff with very little money and know how....and yes we found our bass player so now i have a full band behind me again and things are starting to get moving.

and thanks thom it means alot if someone who doesnt like my style of music can still enjoy it..i still dont know what style of music i fall into but i just write what sounds good to me and hope others like it..
i would never copy what seems to be hip at the time just to fit in..and truth be know i would probably f uck it up if i tried..
