Agreed with the OP to a great extent. But it's all genres that have gone into unoriginal mode.

In past decades the greats like Sabbath and Maiden were right up there and to me Sabbath especially post Ozzy were greater than the classic rock royalty. But yes, when I hear the extreme metal genres I want to throw up. It makes me angry but not in the metal sense.

Another interesting observation - I find it nearly impossible to find a fan of the Moody Blues who isn't above 50 or so. As for Dire Straits - if a teen or 20 something names that as an influence amidst the Hatebreed, Led Zep/Acdc, Iron and Wine, Red hot chilli peppers, U2/Green Day/Foo Fighters swill, I will have a heart attack.
