I know this topic will get a lot of guys juices going but I thought I'd mention this taboo subject because it is the elephant in the living room that has crushed the recorded music sales industry. Billions are lost every year to illegal music copying. What happened? Technology is what happened. When people acquired the ability to record and make copies of an artist music, the game was over for the recorded music sales. I decided to link to my article on my website because it is lengthy, but it's the cold blooded truth. Unless artists take the necessary actions concerning their music, all your money and hard work that you put into your craft will never be respected.

Sorry, I've heard that idea before - selling 'downloads' but really the rights for others to sell your downloads - and they sell the 'rights' to others to sell downloads who sell the 'rights' ... Pyramid Scheme 101.

The fact is that the record companies made their gravy for a long time - making more money selling albums than the artists who recorded them did. When technology got to the digtal stage - in other words copies were 99.999% as good as the originals - and anyone with a computer could make them the record industry's doom was written on the wall.

I read a forum post recently from a college professor who asked one of his classes (everyone under the age of 22 of course) how many people had purchased an album (CD) in the previous month. 1 person raised their hand. He asked how many people had downloaded music in the previous month - everyone raised their hand. He then asked how many people had paid for a download during that month - no hands. There are so many pirate sites popping up that they can't be controlled or shut down fast enough. Kids ar elistening through crappy USB players or earbuds, so they don't care that they've got low-res MP3s. They don't listen to a whole album at one time anyway, they put their phones/players on random play.
I commend anyone who can make real money selling albums/downloads these days - even U2 is giving away their latest album (It probably sucks anyway) - I heard the number of downloads they got in the first few days was abyssmal, too.

Before recording technology the only way for a musician to make money was by performing and maybe writing. That was what... thousands of years? Then for a blip in time technology afforded artists the ability to record and sell copies of performances. Now technology has made it to where once again artists must perform to make money. I'm pretty cool with that.
