To answer the question: avoid any kind of dairy, or hot/cold drinks (if you're a singer). I don't eat in the 4 hours before the gig because it can make me sluggish. I show up 2 hours early so I don't feel rushed for setup and more relaxed when it starts.
Try to greet as many people as possible as they come in; just saying hello can create a good vibe before note one.
In my particular genre I find it helpful to pray for people in the crowd; anything to make me less "self" conscious and more focused on the job in front of me.
And, oh yea, I avoid doing a lot of heroin.
