hi y'all.. I have been listening to a neat Lee Ritenour album titled,
"Six String Theory" Ritenour just might be my favorite guitarist because of his taste in choosing the right notes and phrases depending on what he's trying to accomplish "World Of Brazil" is another COMPILATION of great players.. especially enjoy the track "Water to Drink" (Agua de Beber) but the sad thing about these compilation albums featuring other guest artists is I do not know when Pat Martino or Scofield is doing the lead guitar parts throughout the track or if Lee is playing it? .. like "Lay It Down" off of 6 string theory is that Scofield or Lee doing that neat 1st part and then trading off to the other guitarist later in the instrumental?.. my question is, do you guys or gals know about a free website that gives "insider information" as to how each track was produced and who played what when a guest artist/guitarist was included in that particular track?.. like from 48 seconds to 1 minute 19 seconds of such and such album? who played where?

somethin' like CREEM magazine.. oh you never heard ?

it's a entrepreneurial idea I have had, to write a publication choosing the most classic of albums created in the 1950's to 1980's and breaking them down, as to what guitars were played, who were the players "behind the scenes" what the musicians did in their off time, how much the album cost to produce, who wrote what riffs in the song, how many takes were played before there was a keeper..and which riffs and/or lyrics were "borrowed".. I know there are some rock'n' roll novels out there, but they usually specialize in one band's life and times, "Hammer of The Gods" - Led Zeppelin.."No One Gets Out Here Alive" - The Doors.. but my book would be a mixed bag of the best albums.. one small problem, I would not know where to start to research information as laid out, maybe it's not even remembered, or the people are long dead like Mr. Kramer.. but it is an idea LOL

I think the main problem is that no one remembers all those details. Somewhere, in one studio or another, somoene might have kept a notebook of details for some sessions, but it was not a regular thing.
When I read the Todd Rundgren bio 'A Wizard A True Star - Todd Rundgren In The Studio', I thought I would get all sorts of details like you mention, but there was virtually none of that.
For a TR fan, it was an interesting read, but nowhere near technical enough for me.

dane...I wouldn't think those 3 gtrsts would be too tough to tell apart.

Scofield has quite the recognizable style, sense of space, angular phrasing, and a distinctive tone (almost always using quite a bit of chorus).

Martino is quite the speed merchant and tends to really fill things up. he's very much a bebop player. I often get the feeling he thinks he gets paid by the note!

Rit...well, he is pretty chameleon like (not a slam.....actually a compliment)

BTW....I've always LOVED the tune Aqua de Beber!

a back issue of Guitar Player magazine had an interview with Rit explaining some of the stuff on the Six String Theory album, and he did say, in effect, that he was less comfortable playing with Pat Martino then the other guest guitarists saying in effect, that he was entering Martino's room rather than Martino coming into his room.. something to do with bebop is Martino's specialty .. I had some Pat Martino downloads I purchased from buy.com but somehow the DRM files got tainted or corrupt and they would not platy anymore.. since then, I think most retailers of digital downloads have switched to mp3 files instead of WAV files to avoid DRM issues.. Martino is sh*t hot..

Mark, I am already obligated to you for the batch of P-Jazz cds you have sent me.... I do subscribe to Rhapsody ( I didn't back then) and pretty sure I can punch some Martino tunes up, but have not gotten around to it, but funny, on that World of Brazil album by Lee Ritenour , Rhapsody only allows a few of the tracks to be listened to with a subscription.. some you can't even purchase, ..like Led Zeppelin, he might like to rather sell CDs rather than allow his music to be heard on Rhapsody.. throws out a few tunes as teasers maybe..

Dayne, I'm a big Todd fan, I know all the stories. Todd's been on Darryl's show twice, once at his place on Kauai, the other time at Darryl's house (I think he might have sold it).
Bebe was a Playboy Playmate, and a skank (still is, from what I can see) and slept with a ton of people, of course Steven Tyler (Aerosmith) was the father of her daughter Liv, although Todd helped raise her for 10 years.

yeah, the robbery story is true - it was at the Mink Hollow (New York) house. Not sure it was much of a 'clean out' robbery though, all the equipment was at the studio, not the house.
