I always prefer a 3 piece or 4 piece with keyboards. Why? Other guitar players...egos, too loud, especially too loud when playing rhythm, that sucks.

I think I would have decided the same, I Don't like 2 guitar bands a lot anyway, I don't mind playing rhythm, but if the lead player won't cooperate I'm gone.

I played a jam session a couple of years ago, guy I'd never met. 2 of them actually, both turned out a lot of fun. Both guys knew when to play and when to play, both were seasoned musicians and also knew when to turn up and when to turn down. Not often you find that, but it was a lot of fun for a night. Too bad most players just can't do it...anyway the guy I referred to at the start was one of the best players in this area, loads of stage time, studio experience, and one hell of a player. Took him halfway through the first song to realize I could play too and from there on it was swap licks and have fun. We even managed to pull off harmony feedback on the ending of one song...

If you could find local players who could do that it would be great, unfortunately most are what you encountered. Afraid you'll come off as a better player so he turns up. I don't know about you but I know I wouldn't be satisfied in that situation, I would have walked away from it too.

I already dabble with Jazz. Only problem is I struggle with limiting myself to one style of music. Besides I am too structured a player to play a style of music with no rules. :P
Just kidding Mark, I love Jazz. Having said that I'll just record some when time allows as I have me some jazz originals if there is such a thing LOL!

Mike, I think the language of music is learned. I have a cloudy memory around 1980 of having been the guy that plays too loud!

Billy, I am looking for a band that is keys, drums, base, guitar, and singer. At least 3 of the other players must have a good understanding of harmony vocals. Thinking I'll probably have to resurrect "Cruise Control"

I've always played in 2 (or more) guitar bands - but never HARD ROCK style bands. When I hear rock bands that are only guitar-bass-drums (+ vocals), it always sounds empty when the lead guitarist starts playing a lead and the bass tries to 'fill in'. I can certainly understand the "me vs him" issues of 2 guitarists, but if you are both pros, it should be pretty easy to figure who does what where in cooperation.
Otherwise, get a keyboardist (then you get the Jon Lord vs Richie Blackmore Deep Purple lead rivalry going!)

last night I jammed on one song with others at the open mic - me on acoustic, guy on electric doing leads, guy whose 'feature' it was on vocals and mandolin, and a bass player and drummer.
I could have tried throwing in some acoustic leads at times - I can certainly play rings around the guy who played on electric - but in the interest of the overall sound I kept strictly to rhythm. And you know what? The song went over really well, and the audience enjoyed it. When the band is in-fighting, the audience picks up the vibe.

The ever allusive freaking keyboardist.

We rehearsed last night in Tyler at the church house where our lead man front man and drummer are in the 'praise team'.
It is a rather large auditorium with an good sound and lights system.
They have a Hammond electric piano on stage which our front man played on whilst he sang. ( and did a pretty decent job )
We had never sounded so full before.

Was a nice change.

Right on MIke.

I'm 72 and still teaching my fingers new tricks. I have no intention of putting up my guitars again. At least not until I'm looking at the other side of the grass. You just keep on learning and playing those things as long as you have soul. Your music has a life of its own, and it doesn't age, it just keeps getting better. :)

Just keep the music flowing Jeff.

jeff, i know you're kidding. what w you being a big steely dan fan, i know the respect you have for jazz and jazz players.

seriously though, i'd venture that it takes as much or more discipline to play jazz (well). if you've never read charts in big band and haven't had to match your phrasing and dynamics w other players in your section...you should try it sometime!

same for hitting a melody w a horn or two in a small band!

just the other day i was explaining the rules for the different 8 note (bebop) scales to a student. you hip to the different added note you add to major, dominant 7, and minor scales?

C Maj = C D E F G G# A B

C7 = C D E F G A Bb B

C minor (Dorian) = C D Eb E F G A Bb

"such a thing as jazz originals"? why of course....now, get busy and record some of your's. i'd love to hear 'em. 8)
