This Sunday I have an audition. I will be one of two lead guitarist in the band. The other guy is VERY good. The whole band is very talented. They have been very cool so far and I hope I'll make some good friends and people! I'll keep you guys posted.

It will be a dual lead rhythm for us both. Neither of us has done this in a long time! I am open to it because I believe there is nothing wrong with a healthy competition with mutual respect.

I have been in a bunch of 2 guitar bands and a few 3 guitar bands. The best times were when each guitarist brought something different to the table and we complimented each other musically and appreciated each others differences. The most difficult times were when egos got in the way and every set became a guitar cutting contest. Hope for the best.

Audition went pretty good. I couldn't hear myself. I am afraid the other guitar player has a severe volume problem. It appears he has to be louder than another guitar player. They are very nice people I like them a lot. I have VERY little tolerance for the lack of consideration. Not sure how to handle it they want me to come back.

Tell it like it is. You are extremely talented. I love 2 guitars that are working together. It frees up all sorts of options. Maybe the other guit is just threatened by an awesome player like you.

But keep in mind 2 guits have to work together. Duane and Betts were a rare breed. Duane and Clapton were a rare breed.

Sounds like this other guit has to learn to work with everyone.

However... A second really good guit can be a tremendous asset. Sound changes, volume explosions, interplay, and rest in between song material. A second guitar that has no ego problems is a wonderful thing.

I would pursue, but I would also try to friend and explain to the other guit the value you are bringing in.

Set the record straight from the outset.
This ( two guitars ) will only work if the guitars are in balance and in their place.
Otherwise it's just noise.

Plenty of that to go around already.


I used your post of the OUTLAWS doing GREEN GRASS & HIGH TIDES as an example to my own band.
We had a candid honest discussion on the subject and are all on the same page.
Now just to pull it off technically.

Ahh yes volume wars. One of the best ways to wreck a band. The other guitarist needs to get fully on board with "2 guitars, no ego" or it probably won't work.

Just before I moved I played bass with some guys and was having trouble hearing myself. I was pretty sure I was loud enough - I know my gear.
Problem was I needed to reposition but was stuck. A monitor would have helped.

Would a monitor have helped you Mr. Haley? If not, well the other dude will have to adapt. Maybe you could tape a jam and let him hear it?

They wanted me to join. I declined the offer as politely as I could. They are awesome players a good band. I think they really just wanted a rhythm player and I am not willing to stifle myself like that. The fact is the other guy was just too loud. If that is a problem in the beginning experience tells me it won't get better. I don't have the patience or the time for that.
