New song on my BM player for your comments and suggestions on the mix

Scarlet and Sable copyright 2013 Michael J Birch

Miss Scarlet wore sable boots to stomp on men's hearts
But the blame wasn't all on her, the men did their part
She had turquoise on her fingers, silver on her toes
The men would follow her wherever she goes

Scarlet and sable
Myth and fable
Turquoise and silver
All the joys delivered
Blood is black under moonlight
Silvery runes glowing in the night

Miss Scarlet had golden keys to open all the doors
That hid the secrets never known before
Immortality, wisdom, infinite wealth
Cures for all illness, of unending health

Scarlet and sable
Myth and fable
Turquoise and silver
All the joys delivered
Blood is black under moonlight
Silvery runes glowing in the night

Scarlet and sable, myth and fable

Miss Scarlet had the power to make the heavens open up
In a deluge of rain, then quickly turn to sun
A magic unknown in man's modern times
Where reality and fantasy are intertwined

Scarlet and sable
Myth and fable
Turquoise and silver
All the joys delivered
Blood is black under moonlight
Silvery runes glowing in the night

Scarlet and sable, myth and fable ...

Working so I could only listen in my earbuds... But the mix sounds fine to me.
The acoustic seemed to fluctuate a bit... Like you were trying to catch up so to speak. (I mean the right hand picking just to clarify)
Overall a nice sound... your voice works well with the feel and theme.
Other than the acoustic thing... I liked it. :)

Thanks for listening. Can you explain your acoustic comment a little more? I assume you mean the Em - Em/D - Em/C - Em/D repeating pattern. Extremely tough to get that one right consistently!

On some of the transitions it sounds almost like you fall behind and then rush to catch up.
The 1st time I hear it... is on the second time you go to the Em.
I was thinking maybe you looped it. I suppose if you shut everything else off except for the acoustic and the click you'll probably hear it.
Don't mind me... just nitpicking! :P

I did loop it, as a matter of fact - so you hear it during each two-pattern group? The loop is Em - Em/D - Em/C - Em/D - Em - Em/D - Em/C - Em/D - do you hear it on the BOLD Em, or going into the loop the 2nd time?

Yeah its the 2nd Em... in the first part of the loop I hear that little thump on the D where the note isn't quite clear. Neither is really that noticeable. Maybe I'm the only one hearing it. :?:

I'll solo it out to listen closer when I get a chance, thanks for listening and critiquing. I thought I picked the best of the patterns to loop. It probably would be better fingerpicked (but not by me!) I recorded the acoustic track 3 times and made mistakes every time (don't know what I'll do about playing it live!)
I think I got decent tone from the guitar, though. Used two SM57-clone mics, one pointed at the 12th fret, one at the lower bout, then pan them slightly apart in the mix.

The acoustic sounded fine to me... But my ears are semi- deaf to real tonal quality. Comes from years of playing cheap guitars. Comfortably dumb. :P
Wouldn't mind hearing the lead in the bridge pup position. To give it a bit more bite. But I'm guessing you tried several approaches before you landed it here.

Yeah, I tried bridge and both pickups, before settling on the neck sound. The bridge pickup on the Tele has a LOT of bite, I wanted to keep this smooth due the combo of delay and reverb on it.

It's your ears, Jahva! I listened (and looked) very carefully at the loop today, extending my click track to put it in line, and the Em in question lines up. I did, however, adjust the reverbs a little today.

That's pretty nice Mike. The lead is a hair too mellow for my taste but it is a good tone. The chord picking is about as perfect as one can hope for - great sound too.

You're playing around in 'epic' land with this one - I'm guessing you already have several ideas to make it even more compelling.

btw - Would you happen to have the phone number of the chick riding the tiger?!

Actually, no - I'm pretty much done with it, except for final mix adjustments. What'd you have in mind?

Mike

My ear hears this song as a 'big' production - like something you'd hear in a movie soundtrack or Lord of the Rings endeavor. Maybe that's why I'd like a little more bite on the lead - simply to put it out in front of the strings tympani and horns!

Some dynamics can provide a lot of drama too.

Good tune
