a couple of fun greek scales:

Hijaz G Ab B C D Eb F G

Hijazskiar G Ab B C D Eb F# G

perhaps vinnie will chime in w some more interesting scales. something tells me he has an encyclopedic knowledge of 'em.

Thank you yet again for an overly generous appraisal!

But I ain't all that smart ... but I do know of an encyclopedia of scales .. Nicolas Slonimsky's Thesaurus of Scales and Melodic Patterns.

Many of the scale he created using concepts from Joseph Schillinger's 'System of Musical Composition'.

(Schillinger made a few snarky comments about Beethoven and Mozart etc. in some of his writings and fell into deep disfavor in certain influential quarters. So Berklee College of Music was originally founded as the Schillinger House Of Music, by a student of Schillinger's named Lawrence Berk, eventually Lee came along and it was renamed Berklee College of Music, and Schillinger's teachings removed from the curriculum.)

HijazKar (Double Harmonic Major) it's interval pattern is 1 3 1 2 1 3 1

My favorite scale is this curious pentatonic scale from East Africa B D Eb G Ab ... existing within hijazkar, with the interval pattern 3 1 4 1 3

Here it is in a 70's pop tune from Ethiopia http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PCvCz05rYc

THIS IS YOUR ANSWER? This, is, your, answer? Mark you have never answered any of our political differences. Instead you have only used them to have an excuse to dislike me. (that's your problem) This latest post is very clever because you are trying to separate and divide people that I have known for years. Now you have convinced Scott and Mike that I am the evil one for posting any thing political... Then you prove it out, what an upstanding fellow you are by posting something totally musical.

After all the ways you have twisted every word I have posted... I see you are reaching for support. I UNDERSTAND THAT TACTIC. You lose.

Now what it all comes down too, is you are just a bully.

I'm still here and I don't give a damn about you at all. I would like people to see what you really are. Wheres my ass whooping?????

Is that a scale Vinny ? Or possibly a mode? People number the modes in different ways, but it seems to me when a scale starts on its 1 tone this is its 1st position, when it starts on its 3rd tone, its in the mode of the 3rd tone of the scale. So ur east Africa scale is in D, but could probably work just as well for Eb, I'll try the scale tomorrow I'm fascinated with pentatonic scales. and playing 4 tone arpeggiated scales(the4 tones of a 7th chord played as a scale) So this Africa scale is a minor third, a minor 2nd, a maj 3rd, and a minor 2nd, those minor seconds have to give a cool sound.

U surprise me Vinny, but I can't wait to try the scale.

Thanks Lynard!
I think you may be correct that it is more accurately classified as a mode.

Very cool Vinny. It almost sounds like they are playing backwards... same for the singing.

"BULLSHIT", I say. I don't think any politicians read this forum other than our own home grown variety right here. (and that's all we need)

Ok, your turn. Write whatever you like that you think is bullshit, here or in general. Vent away from open flames.. lol

NOW AIN'T THAT FUNNY HOW THIS WHOLE THREAD GOT TURNED AROUND! By a bunch of obscure musicians writing about obscure modes and scales. The theme of this thread was BS. You guys have proven and gone way beyond that point. THANK YOU.

Mark you are so guilty of being a little commie boy bully. When did you ever think you were that much better then every one else. You are funny... so are your "BUDDIES"! You ran out of excuses and attempted a diversion. Very poor, very poor. The very next tirade you start will be against whatever. You lose dude. You have no political ground to stand on. You have no moral values to stand on. If you read this carefully...

I am not going out of my way to attack you. I am being very civil and this is not about politics. I am not taking any of your posts out of context and launching a barrage of senseless derogatory attacks against you.

You think about it! I noticed you already have taken a different tact. I'm here and you better learn to deal with it. KOOOOL!

hey lynard, i know you ain't a big jazz head but i wonder if you're hip to pat martino. great legendary gtr player. he says that EVERYTHING he plays is using superimposed minor pentatonic scales over different chords including major chords. like if you're soloing over C maj7 you can use Am pent or Bmb5 pent or Em pent, etc.

apologies if you're already hip to that biz.

Mark

That is interesting - I've been reviewing scales and modes since I've finally settled into my new home and got set up. Some minors are apparently majors!?

I've been lazy and have to get past my love affair with minor, harmonic minor and Phrygian - there is a whole world out there! Maybe I should play standing on my head - then I could read Vinnie's post! 8)

To my great shame I simply couldn't face work today so I'll check out the scales you and the boys have posted. Good stuff!

Here is a little jazz piece to show my appreciation: Esperanza Spaulding (a favorite bassist and beautiful woman!) does Wayne Shorter.

well, think about relative majors and relative minors...they use the same scale but you just "start" the scale on a different scale degree....

G Maj = G A B C D E F# G
Em=E F# G A B C D E

Gmaj pentatonic = G A B D E
Emi pentatonic = E G A B D

...and look like you're playing a non reverse firebird!

Esperanza does wayne shorter? i bet he wouldn't mind that!

she's quite the player and vocalist....and not too hard on the eyes either.
how about the link for the tune you had in mind?

thanks, mike. cool version(s) of that tune for sure.

and though it's very much in the spirit of wayne's arranging....thank gawd there's no STEALING going on there! hehe 8)

but damn..i DO hate the ADD camera work/editing that's become so prevalent these days. i mean, can't you just leave the camera on one performer for more than 5 seconds????? it's as if they believe the music isn't engaging enough on it's own and they somehow need to generate more excitement and interest.

i do like the second version better....a little more of a Weather Report vibe to it. (but still no STEALING!)

It's worse when you have a hot band playing and the photographer only focuses on the singer. That annoys the heck out of me.
