Recently installed a six channel stereo headphone mixer into my road rack.

Like to get some thoughts on headphones for recording.

Really need excellent isolation from ambient sound.

And I cannot spend $400.00 on a pair either . . .

What y'all got ?

I've got a few pairs of decent phones but comfort is a huge priority for me. my fav is a pair of audio technica ath-m40 that I've had since 2000. I've thrown them at the ground (damn you madden), accidentally blasted them with volume and they still are comfy and sound pretty good.

good freq response range (5Hz-20kHz), fairly flat response - around $140 back in 00' but they are now down to ~$80. highly recommended.

I have some AKG K512 that I picked up ( cheap ) they sound OK.
( my ears are not all that great anyway due to oilfield firearms ETC )
But they do a poor job of limiting ambient sound.


Now to research some more !

Liking the KOSS . . . real old school . . . like me!

I got some Sonys on ebay (from China, probably counterfeit) for $19. Good isolation, fit well, but like any over-ears they are hot to wear after a while. Little heavy on the bass, but that's expected.
If its just for tracking, isolation and comfort are the prime things and it may be best to ask the band members to get their own (and recommend some models).

You know it . . . the financial support that Jeanette and I were funneling towards the band must go else where now.

I have 6 sets of phones but honestly most sound pretty different and color the mix too much for critical listening. The ones I trust: Sony MDR 7506. I have owned them for about 15 years and they are still pretty comfortable and true to the music. I don't know if they are still available but I am sure there is a comparable set for around $150-200. Give em a listen.

Will definitely need something of a higher quality for the recording station.
Right now, something relatively in inexpensive that provides good ambient sound isolation for me to practice and rehearse in is the goal.

Well, I've tied many different phones in the studio, from cheap Sennheisers and Sonys and some I can't even recall. The last one's I got delivered everything I wanted. The Audio-Technica ATH-M50. I can't tell just how much I love these headsets. Comfortable, can get loud, punchy, accurate, clear. At $150.00 they are priced reasonably for all they do. Just a great set of tracking and monitoring phones.

Try guitar Centers Sennheiser headphones. $99 a pair.

I'll be the second to recommend the sennheiser brand.

for an affordable but comfortable tracking headphone the hd280 pros are good. They've reduced the price over the years and now they're like 100 a pair.

Pretty good isolation at lower levels and not fatiguing on your ears. My clients like them alot.
