Thejohnny7band wrote:Mine went just ok. It wasn't a train derailment and the crowd was good but this is the first time we have played with this drummer and he was pretty unprepared. As a result we had to dumb everything down to the lowest common denominator. That takes away a lot of the spontaneous magic that happens when everyone is relaxed and in the groove. Seen better, seen worse and on to the next one.

yeah, looks like the old adage...."the band is only as good as the drummer" gets proven once again. amazing how a great drummer can make a bunch of average or even mediocre musicians sound good. and how the flipside holdss true as well.

well, johnny...as long as no children, small animals, or wimmins got hurt in the process! 8)

Yep, a good drummer who is prepared makes music better.

My wife came to the first set and she has been around my musical projects for 30 yrs so she is a keen critic. She said it sounded good but it looked like you guys were working pretty hard to hold it together. Yes we were Dear. :)

It did get better as we adapted to the situation but we never got to that sweet musical place where everything just falls easily into the groove. Some nights that happens from the first note so we have to hang on to those moments in the old memory banks.

A good drummer just leads the way and makes music so much easier! On the flip side an unprepared drummer with a bad work ethic can make you work your ass off!

I may have put it in a different way many many times. The drums are a major, major, major, factor in a good band.

I do like the the joke JW posted about... What do you call a drummer without a girl friend?

Homeless.

Tonight I'll do 'Down By The River' in honor of Neil's 68th birthday 2 days ago, and 'Sweet Jane' in honor of Lou Reed - they're having a public memorial service in NYC today for him, no speeches, no live performances by others, just Lou's songs as chosen by his family.
Other songs tonight - TBD

Good time at the family reunion last Saturday. Actually made a little bread while breaking it.
Not a bad deal at all.
This Saturdays youth event was postponed. The high school football team out of Athens apparently won their game and are going to playoffs.
Any event in Texas competing with HSFB is doomed to fail.

playing 8:45 - 12:45 gigs friday and saturday at the truckstop w THE 121's and playing an earlier 6-9 gig on friday pre-truckstop w PLANET JAZZ.

that'll mean a little bit of shuffling and juggling for friday. late afternoon i'll head to the truckstop to set up my usual bass rig and leave a bass for our lead gtrst who will fill in til i get there around 9:15... The 121's gig starts at 8:45 but i'm playing til 9:00 across town w P-Jazz.

so hit the last note....leave getting the money, and hauling out my other bass rig to my P-Jazz cohorts.

i'm pumped about getting to play bass at the P-JAZZ gig since it's been about a yr since we played in that lineup w me on bass.....this one here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jiYEFNijKto
