I was @46 when my husband got me guitar lessons. I had sang since I was young but never played an instrument. I had a teacher who knew how impatient I am and gave me chords and songs my first lesson. By the time I had lessons for about a couple months I wrote my first song. The following week I played three new songs I wrote for my teacher and he was a little more excited about the second group. I have written somewhere around 75 to 100 songs. Some good, some not so good, some serious and some funny. I love the guitar, it gave me an avenue and I am now 50!!!! Play on !!!!!!!! Have a blast !!!! Keep it up ! Jam as often as you can and with as many different people as you can. I have a couple of groups of people that I jam with and you get stuff from the different styles and likes and dislikes of each musician.

God Bless !!!

When one adds to their life - music which one writes and plays themselves . . . it makes it all a whole new world, doesn't it?

I'm 50. Played on and off since 13. more off than on. Never progressed past the level of someone who had played for less than a year till 3 years ago (47) when I started playing regularly. Still not real good but I think some of the stuff I write is real good. And I keep getting better. So I'd say that I didn't really start playing till 47.

Thank you Guitargal for your post.
Many times I have thought that I am to old to accomplish something in Music, but one is never to old to start anything. My son started Karate several months ago and one of the instructors a 3rd Degree Black Belt is 60 years old and started without any knowledge of Karate when she was 50. I have written about 10 songs, no lyrics just music. Even though I will never be a rock star maybe my son can use some of the songs I wrote when he starts a band. Then I would have accomplish something in music.
Thanks again for your post Guitargal, I listened to the songs you posted on your site , they sound great

If you have a good time you have accomplished something in, or at least with music.

Started bass at 27, bought an acoustic and started guitar two years ago at 41.

How much you want it is more important than age, IMO.

I think a better litmus test for a musician's accomplisments is to see if one can cause an Audience to have a good time, eh?
.
Good feelings are contagious. And this world can use all the happiness it can get.
If one has a good time playing music, that's one thing.
If one is a good musician - that's another thing, entirely.
. . .
But neither of those things are accomplishments until one can share his music and change the way other people feel.
Once one has done that - if the people like your music, and they ask you to come back to play for them again . . . THEN you have accomplished something . . .

Thats a very valid point RM. However for myself, at times just a good practice session, me and the boys jammin. That is a tremendous release of my psychosocial stress, that builds up with my job and life in general.
I would agree that to do that for others would be a greater accomplishment. But small victories matter as well.

The money I make from music pays my bills, but the satisfaction and fullfilment come from live performance. That's still a rush that has never been outdone.

Man thats awsome Irminsul. If I ever make enough money from music to pay for my gas it'll be a first. I am determined to improve daily.
