So Dover Soul has a gig tomorrow night, and for the third set I will do a mini-set with The Farleys. Today the All Around Bar, tomorrow the world!

perminately? Seriously? I guess 5th grade was too much for you. But the world needs janitors so you'll get a job, as long as you don't have to spell or talk.

So my Marshall has been in the shop this week and I've been trying to figure out what amp to use tonight. I have a B-52 but the thing is heavy and I just want to leave it in the basement and just use it for my rehearsal amp. The wife gave me the go ahead to get a new one if I had to, provided it wasn't $3,000. I'm sick of Guitar Center so on the way home from work last night I stopped in at BluesAirman Guitars to see what they had. A young dude was jamming an Epiphone Les Paul copy through a Blackstar combo. It sounded awesome! Turns out the guy is Joey Gaydos, Jr., who was in "The School of Rock" with Jack Black. I ended up buying the amp and invited Joey to come up and sit in tonight. Well no sooner did I load the new amp in my car when the repair place called and said the Marshall was ready. Oh well now I have a new amp. Tonight is going to be amazing.

I got a can of D-oxit and want to do a mod on my Fender HotRod Deluxe.. change out the linear volume pot to a audio taper pot, to correct the master volume "problems" the early versions of Hot Rods had, the problem is you turn the volume setting from 1 to 2 and it goes from super quiet to super loud.. Fender engineers figured out their engineering mistake later in production.. it is unacceptable gain

congrats on the new amp, jimmy. yeah...new toys!

a few wks ago i borrowed a Genz Benz Shenandoah 10T combo from Jack, the guy I play w who fronts THE 121's (truckstop house band). he plays a Chet Atkins "solid body" ac/el thru it and he fills the entire (large) room w the little sucker! killer tone too.
it weighs all of 19 lbs. it's 175 watts and supposedly 300 watts (not sure about that) w an additional 8 ohm cab hooked to it. it's primary use is an acoustic/el amp and it has a 10" neo spk and an adjustable level horn (three settings)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001U5 ... er=&sr=1-3

so, i had a duo gig coming up with Val (my "other wife"... HAHAHA) and thought i'd borrow it to try my ac/el '86 FLATIRON A5 Jr. mando thru. we were playing a small room winery gig. i started off the first few tunes on mando and could not find ANY decent tones AT ALL! then i plugged my old KAY upright into it...holy crapola batman! it was the voice of god!!!! i use a Pierre Joseph magentic p/u on that bass.

i leave the (afternoon) gig and before heading to my evening gig at the truckstop....meet my real wife for dinner. i bring her over to my car to show her the amp. "oh no, is this yet another amp you want to get??!?!!" ....."just c'mon over and check this out, babe". she sees it and goes, "cool amp. that'd be easy to carry" i had her heft it and she says...."ok, you MUST have one of those"!

that night before i handed the rig back over to jack, i disconnect it's internal spkr and plugged it into my 2x10 cab. so...even just using it's (detatchable) amp at it's 175 watts....it kicked serious booty.

i normally use an Ashdown Blue 180 combo for that gig. 180 watts thru a 12". and i use the additional 2x10 cab w it. the ashdown ain't too heavy at 55 lbs but damn.....19 lbs is sure a lot more appealing!

and i like the idea that i can use this little Genz Benz for gtr and vibes too.

and truth be told...i love the idea that it'll likely blow a lot of people's minds when they see the size of this thing and what it can do.

(someone cue wee willie to come back w a juvenile comment about "people's minds being blown when they see how small his junk is....and what it can do")

looks like i can get one for $869....i'd prolly change the 10" in it for a 10" neodymium "bass spkr" for around $100. that still comes in below 1K.

the other deal i've been considering is a MARKBASS CMD 121P combo (wifey thinks the name oughta sell me on it). http://www.guitarcenter.com/Markbass-Mi ... 1395927.gc

If you gig a lot, a small quality guitar amp is golden. I dragged around big amps and PA gear for a long time until I learned how to get the sound I wanted with smaller gear. My bandmates backs thanked me.

Oof you like those Zip? Damn wish you were closer, I'd ask you to show me how to use it so I can get a good tone.

I was using a friend's and it seemed unwieldy to me..probably just me. :(

:-D actually, 4 to 5 is a good volume range on most amps.

ALWAYS....and I mean...ALWAYS bring your biggest and best rig to your gigs! :x The only time I'd bring my combo (150 watt with 2 12's) would be if I was having my amp serviced or the tubes were going... No matter how small or big the gig.... always go with the 4x 12 cab with at least a 100 watt head... and I personally ALWAYS mic my amp through the PA... Don't matter how much you have to drag around... Looks cooler on stage! 8)

Ecchh Why do you mic your guitar when you know it's louder than your PA, 9x out of 10.

I'd mic a small combo, but I hate the tones that come from small amps.

Any 4x12 is going to sound better than just about 99% of combos in general, depending on what kind of music you are looking to perform.

For metal and heavier stuff a combo is a very bad idea. (imo)

Sorry, I am cornfused today and methinks I am just repeating what you just said, Crip.

OMG!! My guitar sounds AWESOME through the PA system... Remember, we're only a 3 piece band so my guitars need to fill out the room as much as possible... The bassist brings this humongous rig with a million cabs....he don't need to be mic'd but sometimes in the bigger venues, we'll mic the drums... but I love hearing my amp thru the PA....
