I have had bands STEAL my songs. Tonight I realized an @sshole is STEALING credit as the composer of music he didn't compose. A friend and his DEAD BROTHER wrote the music. The GUILTY PARTIES KNOW WHO YOU are? If your a HACK and CAN NOT WRITE or (complete) your own music then get out of the Biz.

That sucks, Jeff. I copyright my songs as I release them, but things are 'automatically' copyrighted when you do them (proof is the tough part). Taking credit for writing is stupid, though - is this during live performances or recorded?

I hate to say it, but these days people think it's ok to steal someone else's music, right up until the point where they get caught.

Make you sure bring it to their attention that you know they stole it.

PS: Willie, either upload something worth something, musically speaking or be quiet. So far all you showed us is that you have imagination, but can't tune your guitar, nor play it. ssdd

I discovered it last night when I downloaded some music we recorded to my site. When playing the download the plagerizer's name is attached to the down load. He did write 50% of the first song. My friend wrote the other 50% and 100% of the other 2 songs. We recorded an album as a band we took our gig money and EVERYONE pitched in as a band for the budget equally for the album. It is a long story but the short story is we tried to make it in the music business. This guy was so ruthless he detroyed the band. I did very little of the writing of those songs. It just pissed me off that My friend did so much for that project including going for a recording Engineering degree picking the best studio in Houston to intern at and getting us half price for recording time as a result. It was like the thief is kicking him while he was down for all of his kindness! Sorry about the rant but when I saw that I just went ballistic. I contacted this friend last night to let him know and he was very forgiving and quoting George Harrison LOL!
The songs were all copyrighted thru BMI and if my friend were at all like me there would be a lawsuit going. I guess I should be more like him! All of that just brought back the emotions of when it was done to me in the 80's!

I had a $395.00 pocket watch either stolen or lost in the mail that was headed for Mainland China.. I never insure stuff and packages under 4LBS. can't be insured anyhow.. USPS First Class International Packages are 4 LBS. and under .. RULES AND REGULATIONS cause the government tells us that's the way it's going to be you ever call 1-800-ASK USPS? .they are the laziest and slovenly bunch I have ever dealt with, keep trying calling back and eventually you get a rep that will help.. I don't expect to ever get that loss back, (paypal has already reversed the payment back to the Chinaman) but would be nice to look at the "dead letter pile" in Bell Gardens and see if the label got scraped off or something, I do have a MRC Search initiated, but they are prolly just going thru the motions.. LOL..l I am trying to let you know thievery is still with us even in these modern times.. did I tell you about my edema device yet? me and Lenny were going over to ....................................

Songwriters steal songs? Say it ain't so buddy. Say it ain't so. But I had some one steal my stuff with a van once. They got into my yard and stole all of my welding equipment and a bunch of diamond saws I had for cutting cement. They also took 3 FULL cans of gas. I see them pulling out my yard. I chased them down the road for 1.5 miles until (yes you guessed it they ran out of gas ) I chased them into the woods until I figured they were gone took all my stuff out of the van and came back and filled her up with pure methane. When they started her up.... BOOM!!! No more van and no mone thieves.

It doesn't matter if your song has a copyright or not, UNLESS the song becomes a huge hit (i.e. big money is involved). The lawyer fees and costs of filing a lawsuit for a non-hit song would mean you would be paying big bucks and wasting a lot of time just to prove a point.

This kind of sh*t resonates with me, cause you know I've had some music stolen as well. It takes a real dirtbag to do that type of crap.

Anyone that is so desperate that would steal from someone who creates from nothing is a total scumbag and deserves the very worst things that can happen to a thief!!!!!

Keep all your stuff handy, you never know when you'll have to show it to the judge but he'll slam those fingers in the door jam when he or she finds out.

BMI is not copyrighting, its just registering the song for royalties/rights. Unless the band had a written contract regarding songwriting/credits, or copyrighted the songs through the US Copyright office, there's not much anyone could do - the lawyers would be the only ones making money. Wouldn't hurt to send a message to the guy (or better yet, post it on his facebook page!) to let him know what you think of what he did.

Senility is definitely taking hold of my little brain. Your right Jimmy it would be senseless to sue. The thing that most irritates me is folks like that know
that. This guy is underhanded enough to do that just to piss you off. I am over it now. Like my friend said there are plenty more songs where those came from. You guys all know the stories of hits being stolen from folks like John Fogerty not even able to play his own songs because a drummer and bass player had the name!

If somebody stole my tunes, regardless if they made money or not off them, I would pay them a personal visit. Then most likely they would sh*t and p*ss in their pants for fear of subsequently having their jaw wired shut. And I would laugh in their face.
