Most people who wear "cowboy" hats have no idea about horses or cows and will never own or ride either. It's all "playtime" and the infantile mind at work coupled with whatever type of conditionalism the mind in question has somehow "retained". In short it is a tragic joke and embarrassment to mankind.

I am not surprised you have such difficulty ... good luck to you.

Did he grab that donkey by the butthole? lol

And I had to think about that to get "it accomplishes the task".

He grabbed that pony by the tail to pull it out of the mud.
That's alright ... just don't let Vampier catch you wearing a cowboy hat!

well, let's see....i've got two old Supro lap steels (one in "lap g" and the other in C6 tuning) and i play dobro in a bluegrass band. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZrxsKZed6Q

nope, jerry douglas and rob ickes have nothing to worry about from the likes of me.

if ya wanna avoid confusion in the future you might be more specific and refer to the specific instrument(alist) you're looking for....a pedal steel gtrst, a lap steel gtrst, or a resonator instrument.

I am. I sing bass to mezzo soprano. That's just 3 octaves.

To the original poster; Texas should be the easiest place to find a steelplayer, there's more in Texas than any place else! Actually, anyone that wants to play pedal steel guitar has got to be serious about it. It requires a considerable investment, in time and money. Here's a pic of some of my gear, what you see in this picture will cost you about 4000.00 or more. Then, figure 4-5 years of work to get to a mediocre level. Most people won't make this kind of commitment. :D

Good luck in your search,

That's a very nice looking guitar!
A Rittenberry! Is it a "Cajun Special" with a Jerry Wallace pickup?

Paul - you're a rare exception! I've still got about 2-1/2 octaves, used to be over 3 - should have quit smoking long before I did!

The Rittenberry guitars are really nice. Mine are the normal E9th tuning, the blue one does have the Wallace pickup. I own two of these fine instruments, here is a pic of the other one.

Sadly, the pedal steel suffers from a lot of stereotyping, I personally believe it can be used in most styles of music. Lots of other musicians are kind of narrow minded about this. :)

I didn't realize the pro models were so expensive! No doubt learning to use the pedals and knee levers takes a LOT of practice.

I never thought much of pedal steel until I saw what this guy can do with it...

Here is one of the first things I saw of this guy on PBS Soundstage.

I noticed the blue guitar has four pedals, is that doing something beyond the standard E9?

Because of the 4 pedals I had thought it might be their "Cajun Special" that pulls 5 strings with a 4th pedal.

I agree that there is a limiting stereotype attached to the pedal steel.

Some notable exceptions ...

With Alvino Rey it started out as a big band jazz instrument.

The Sacred steel guitar gospel tradition that goes back to the 1930's, has developed almost parallel to, yet totally independent of, the C&W steel guitar tradition. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VQN6HIuOjM

Susan Alcorn takes the PSG way way out there!

A much more common pull for a 4th pedal on an E9 PSG would be a "Franklin Pedal" lowering strings 5, 6, and 10 by a whole step.

The 4th pedal on the blue guitar is the Franklin pedal, lowering 5,6, and 10. Paul Franklin has come with several pedal changes that have become very common on later model pedal steels. Paul is a great player, one of the best ever.
